Chapter 3
As soon as I stepped out, I ran into James' parents coming up from the stairs.
The Bennett family was all staying at the Manor tonight.
I was about to walk past them and head downstairs to check things out.
But then I heard Helen mention me, so I stopped, turned around, and followed them into the room.
Helen grumbled to Edward.
"If only Sophia had married James back then. She's got the skills and the personality to be a perfect match for him," she muttered.
Edward replied calmly.
"As long as James is healthy, don't stress about anything else," he said.
"I'm only telling you this, that's all. Emily's been married to James for six years now, and I haven't even seen a hint of a grandchild," Helen continued.
"When people ask me, I don't even know how to answer. And now, she doesn't even come around to the Bennett house anymore.
"She's so dull, not likable at all. Every time she comes to the Manor, she's got that long face, like someone owes her big time. How could she ever compare to Sophia?" Helen said.
I didn't feel upset by what Helen said. Honestly, she was telling it like it is.
But then I heard Edward say, "The fact that she was willing to marry James under those circumstances already makes her better than Sophia."
Helen didn't argue. Back then, even if James came to, he might never be able to stand on his own two feet again.
Thankfully, Dr. Vaughn was around. If it weren't for him, James wouldn't be back on his feet.
I didn't expect Edward to know about it.
But then again, people like them wouldn't overlook something so obvious.
They didn't care. As long as someone could marry James to bring him good fortune, that was enough.
Now that James was back on his feet, of course they wanted him to marry someone even better.
Parents always want the best for their kids. There's no right or wrong in that.
That's how people are, never satisfied.
"Don't be so hard on Emily. I'm not asking you to treat her like you do Sophia, but at least don't give her a hard time," Edward said.
Helen sounded a bit annoyed.
"Fine, I won't say anything about her next time she comes over," she replied.
I thought to myself. There would't be a next time. The next time you saw me, it would be at my funeral for sure.
Who knows when they'll even notice I'm dead.
But it doesn't matter anymore. I'm dead anyway.
What does it even matter if they find out or not?
The next day, I hitched a ride in James' car and followed him to Bennett Corporation.
I've tried before, but it turns out I really can't stray too far from James.
James had his own private elevator. When I was alive, I never got to step foot in the CEO elevator, but now that I'm dead, I finally get a taste of the VIP life. Guess dying has its perks. I thought to myself.
Honestly, aside from being roomy, there's nothing special about the CEO elevator.
Once James got to his office, he dove right into work, while I started wandering around Bennett Corporation.
I'd been to the office a few times before, but except for James' assistant, Wesley Finch, nobody even recognized me.
Now that I'm a ghost, I can go anywhere I please.
Everyone at the company knew Sophia, and they all had nothing but good things to say about her. As soon as I started wandering around, I kept hearing people talk her up everywhere.
Sophia was rich and beautiful, but never put on airs. She was super friendly to everyone, and honestly, everyone thought she and James were made for each other.
There were tons of people at the company who shipped them, some even had a group chat for their ship.
Our marriage was never made public, so everyone outside the family still thought James was single.
