Chapter 4
After wandering around for a bit, I drifted back to James' office.
Everyone outside was gushing about Sophia. Maybe I was being petty, but for some reason, I couldn't stand it.
James was seriously boring. He sat in his office all day, never moving.
And since I was a ghost now, I couldn't even play on my phone. Talk about boring.
I floated over to his desk, thinking maybe I could kill some time by checking out the files he was working on.
But I couldn't make heads or tails of them, so I lost interest and drifted over to the couch to take a nap.
I'd already napped twice, and James was still buried in his work. He was like some emotionless robot.
After tagging along with James for more than half a month, I noticed something weird.
James kept his feelings so well hidden. If Olivia hadn't told me he liked Sophia, there's no way I would've figured it out myself.
James treated Sophia pretty well, but it never felt like they were really close.
Sophia dropped by James' office all the time, though most of the visits were about work.
But come on, he's the CEO of a massive company. There's no way he needed to deal with the tiny design team every single day.
To everyone else at the company, it looked like they were a couple with some serious romantic vibes, totally glued to each other.
But after watching them interact in the office day after day, I realized their relationship was almost too innocent.
Forget anything steamy, they didn't even touch each other, not even a hand-hold.
You could tell Sophia wanted to get closer to James, but every time, he'd either dodge her or act like he didn't notice.
At that moment, Sophia came in to drop off some files and saw James rubbing his forehead, looking totally wiped out.
She tried to move closer and offer him a massage to help him relax, but James brushed her off.
Sophia withdrew her hand, looking a bit embarrassed.
I figured maybe our marriage was holding him back. He probably didn't want the woman he liked to end up as the other woman.
Now that I was dead, he didn't have to keep holding himself back anymore.
Thinking about it, I actually kind of hope James finds out I'm dead.
I don't want our marriage to trap him, and honestly, I don't want it to trap me either.
Ever since Sophia came back, I'd been waiting for James to ask for a divorce.
But even after I died, those divorce papers never showed up.
Since our last fight, we hadn't talked for almost two months.
He hadn't come home once, crashed at the office or holed up in that apartment near work.
It was the first time we'd ever argued in all six years we'd been married.
It all started when I found a lipstick stain on James' shirt.
Honestly, with the way things were between us, it's not like I could really stop him from seeing other women.
I made a fuss about it, hoping he'd finally ask for a divorce.
But instead, James walked out angry, never even brought up divorce.
But there was no way my death can stay a secret for long. Arthur's birthday was coming up in a few days.
Even if James doesn't want to see me, he'll still make sure Wesley calls me to attend.
My identity hasn't been made public, but plenty of people in our circle know about me.
If I don't show up at a party like that, everyone will start gossiping.
