Chapter 2
Six years ago, James was targeted by the Bennett Family's enemies and got into a car accident that nearly took his life.
He spent over two weeks in the ICU before he was finally out of danger.
He survived, but stayed in a coma the whole time.
His legs were severely injured in the crash, leaving him unable to stand.
Arthur was desperate, so he went to a fortune-teller, who said they needed to find someone whose birth chart would bring James good fortune through marriage.
As luck would have it, both Sophia and I were a perfect match for James.
The Bennett Family all thought Sophia would be the one to marry James.
But in the end, it ended up being me who married James.
The reason was that Sophia wasn't old enough to get married yet.
But I was the right age to get a marriage license.
So for James' sake, I was the one who had to marry him, hoping it would help him get better.
Sophia couldn't bear seeing her beloved end up with me, so she left the country in heartbreak. She only returned six months ago.
Turns out, the whole "marriage for luck" thing actually worked.
Only a month after I married James, he finally woke up from his coma.
And three years ago, he managed to walk again, so Arthur was always nice to me.
At dinner, I watched as Sophia was doted on by the Bennett Family.
Helen even personally picked out dishes for Sophia and put them on her plate.
Even the usually stern James' father, Edward Bennett, was, for once, gentle with Sophia, reminding her to make herself at home.
They really seemed like one big happy family.
After dinner, Olivia invited Sophia to stay over at the Bennetts' place.
"Sophia, it's already so late. Why not stay here? You can head to work with James in the morning."
Helen echoed, "Why don't you stay over, Sophia?"
Sophia didn't answer right away. She glanced at James, and when he stayed silent, she gave a gentle smile and declined.
"My parents are still waiting for me at home. I'll come hang out with you another time," Sophia said.
I looked at James too. The girl he cared about was right there in front of him. Why didn't he say anything to ask her to stay? I couldn't help but wonder.
The Bennett Family's driver drove Sophia home.
Honestly, I didn't hate Sophia. On the contrary, I really admired her.
She was smart, and she always handled things gracefully, never losing face.
She always covered all the bases, never giving anyone a chance to gossip about her.
That's why everyone including parents and others liked her, even from a young age.
Seriously, who wouldn't like her? Even James couldn't help but like her.
After Sophia left, James headed straight for his study.
I floated after James, like a ghost drawn to him, unable to resist following wherever he went.
It felt as if my soul was tethered to him. I couldn't stray too far.
Strangely, this was the first time I'd ever entered James' study.
The room was simple yet stylish, and James buried himself in his work without even looking up.
I wandered around the study, bored out of my mind.
There wasn't a single photo on James' desk.
Only stacks of paperwork, and the only decoration was a tiny succulent plant.
I leaned in for a closer look at the succulent. Was this some rare, pricey variety? Why would it be sitting on James' desk? I wondered.
Honestly, I couldn't tell if it was anything special, so I gave up. Maybe it was one of James' weird little habits.
It was hard to picture a high-powered CEO like James actually being into succulents.
It really made me see James in a whole new light.
I hovered around every corner of the study like a restless ghost, but James still had no intention of taking a break.
I was bored out of my mind, so I decided to drift out of the study. Surprisingly, it actually worked.
