Chapter 2
By the time I was on my third bag of potato chips, the system finally couldn't hold back anymore.
"Host, why are you eating so many chips?" it asked.
I bit down hard on the chip in my mouth.
"I'm going to stuff myself until I'm a total blob. He'll be disgusted by the sight of me and shoot me dead," I said.
The system thought I had gone nuts from frustration. It tried to cheer me up, then it plopped down and let out a sigh.
So there we were, just me and the system, sulking together in the room. It was truly miserable.
Just as I was plotting new ways to dig my own grave, there was a sudden knock at the door.
Daniela stood at the door with a smile and handed me a white shirt.
"I am so sorry. Myron stayed at my place the other day, and I got his shirt dirty," she said.
She was waiting for me to lose my temper and yell at her.
I had too much on my mind to get dragged into her drama.
"Thanks," I said.
When Daniela didn't get the reaction she wanted, her expression turned ugly.
She seized my wrist all of a sudden.
She snapped, "What are you even pretending for? Let me tell you, no matter how saintly you act, he won't even look your way.
"If I hadn't gone abroad and left him alone, do you really think he'd ever choose you? You're nothing but a second-rate stand-in."
Her straight-up provocation didn't bother me at all.
"Think whatever you want. Let go of me," I said.
I instinctively tried to pull my hand back, but before I could really react, Daniela crumpled to the floor.
"Ah!" Daniela shrieked.
Just as she was about to hit the ground hard, Myron appeared out of nowhere and caught her in his arms.
A slap landed on my face before I even knew what was happening.
"June, I've warned you so many times. Why can't you listen?" Myron said.
My cheek burned with pain. Even the slightest movement of my mouth made me want to cry.
I didn't even try to explain myself. I kept my eyes locked on Daniela.
She looked guilty and buried her face in Myron's chest, sobbing.
Daniela said, "Myron, it's all my fault. I shouldn't have made June angry. You two are getting married soon. Don't fight because of me.
"I only came to see you one last time. Now that I have done that, I won't bother you anymore."
Then she started to struggle to leave.
Myron wasn't about to let her leave. He scooped her up in his arms.
He strode right past me and carried her straight into the bedroom.
He didn't even spare me a single look.
The look he had given me was full of disgust. I had no doubt that if Daniela had not been there, he would have strangled me.
"What are you standing around for? Get lost." Myron's emotionless voice came from behind me.
I cast my eyes down, staring at the message that had appeared on my phone moments ago.
I gave a bitter smile.
"Myron, if I hurt Daniela again, will you kill me?" I asked.
Myron fell silent.
I already knew the answer. I was just waiting for him to say it out loud.
If the ending was already decided, I might as well take it calmly.
He never answered, and I stopped waiting for him.
The rescue team was urging me again. This criminal gang was extremely brutal.
Plenty of people were injured, and the medical team was shorthanded. I had to hurry over.
I sighed. "Condoms are in the cabinet. I probably won't be back for a while, so help yourselves."
I slung my bag over my shoulder and turned to leave.
But just as I was about to step out the door, I heard his answer.
"No," he said.
