Chapter 3
After two days of bumpy travel, I finally arrived at the remote village.
The team leader glanced at me and threw a medical kit at me.
"Hurry up. A bunch of the wounded aren't going to make it much longer," he urged.
I had only ever heard about scenes like this, but seeing it for myself sent chills down my spine.
The place was packed with wounded, lying everywhere in all directions, crying out in pain.
It was a terrible sight.
"How could this happen?" I blurted out.
The team leader looked serious.
"We had no idea these people were so ruthless. Right now, our top priority is to rescue the wounded trapped across the way," he said.
I was shocked.
I asked, "Wait, there are still people trapped inside?"
That was the criminals' stronghold. Rescuing someone from there was almost impossible.
The team leader sighed heavily.
He said, "Yeah, I heard this woman was tricked here by her blind date. It has been a day now. She has probably been through hell."
"What should we do?" I asked.
Even though this was a fictional world, I had inevitably grown attached to the people here after so many years, especially the innocent civilians.
They were ordinary people trying to get by, just like me in my original world.
I sighed. Only ordinary people could understand each other's struggles.
The criminals agreed to release the woman on the condition that one of our team members brought a medical kit to exchange.
After days and nights of fighting, they had suffered heavy casualties too.
Medical supplies were just as scarce for them.
I volunteered for the mission.
It wasn't out of some noble sense of justice.
It was because if I accidentally died before completing the mission, the system could bring me back to life.
Myron was well aware of that.
With the medical kit in hand, I slowly made my way toward the enemy's side.
Just a few steps away, someone suddenly shouted from the other side. "June!"
I snapped my head up, meeting Daniela's trembling eyes.
What was she doing here?
The enemies didn't give us time to catch up. They pressed a gun to her head.
"What are you waiting for? If you don't want her to die, bring the damn kit over now," one of them said.
Daniela was covered in bruises and scratches. She had clearly suffered a lot.
She was on the verge of a mental breakdown.
"Are you deaf or what? Hurry up and get over here," she snapped.
To be honest, if I were not a rescue team member responsible for every mission target, I would have dropped the stuff and left.
I took a deep breath and handed over the medical kit.
"Here, take it. Now let her—" Before I could finish my sentence, the enemies hiding on both sides rushed out.
One of them slammed a kick into my knee. I fell to the ground with my legs buckling.
"You broke your promise. You're shameless," I snapped.
The enemies laughed loudly.
"You actually expected us to keep our word. To tell you the truth, we never planned to let you go. Having another hostage gives us a better chance of surviving," one of them said.
To be honest, I was scared.
Even though I could come back to life, the pain of dying wouldn't be any less.
These ruthless criminals wouldn't make my death quick and painless.
"What is the point of talking to her? She's going to die anyway," one of them said.
My mind was spinning, desperately trying to figure out how to escape.
Suddenly, Daniela, who was supposed to be tied up, slipped out of her ropes and casually sat down on the couch behind her.
Seeing her like that, I knew everything that had happened was a show.
She was not a victim at all. She was an accomplice.
