Chapter 6
I slammed the bedroom door, threw myself on the bed, and sobbed into the pillow.
I cried briefly, then calmed down and scheduled a moving company.
Once the time was set, I hauled my luggage to the living room doorway.
Thomas was still sitting in the living room, quietly watching me bustle around.
After I piled my stuff by the door, he suddenly asked.
"It's noon. Want to grab lunch before you go? I can order."
I shot back, "I'm not hungry!"
Thomas went quiet again. After about ten seconds, he rolled his wheelchair into the study.
Tears kept welling up in my eyes.
I wiped my tears, flopped on the couch, and texted Chloe.
Chloe had no idea I was pregnant. She was all hyped up about setting me up with someone.
She said her boyfriend's tall, rich, handsome childhood friend wanted to meet me.
I no longer believed in or cared about love.
With a baby on the way, I refused to ruin someone else's life, so I turned her down.
We talked for ten minutes when someone knocked.
I thought it was the movers, so I rushed to open it.
Felix stood outside, holding a folder, and greeted me with a big grin.
"Hey, Sis! Just dropping something off for Thomas," Felix said cheerfully.
I stepped aside to let him in.
His eyes widened at the piled bags. "Are you and Thomas moving out?"
I shook my head, expression flat. "I'm moving out. And don't call me that anymore."
He looked taken aback, hesitating to speak.
Just then, Thomas opened the study door and came out.
Felix handed Thomas the folder, said goodbye, and left quickly.
Thomas took the folder and returned to the study without looking at me.
I flailed at the study door, then collapsed on the couch, staring into space.
About three minutes later, Felix sent me a long message.
[Hey, hope you don't mind me saying this.]
Thomas was great on the trip, saying he wants to make things official with you and joked about treating me to dinner after you marry.
[On the way back, he was still all smiles until someone messaged him.]
After talking briefly, his mood suddenly dropped. I guess he heard bad news.
[I hope you two can talk and not let a misunderstanding come between you.]
I didn't reply. Three minutes later, Felix sent another message.
[The night before we left, Thomas got drunk, cried, and said he didn't want to burden you but couldn't let you go.]
[He knew it was selfish and that he'd hold you back, but he still wanted to marry you.]
[My boss helped Thomas find an acupuncture master who said he might walk again. Not sure if you heard.]
[If you still have feelings, don't let a misunderstanding keep you apart.]
By then, tears blurred my eyes. I gave a weak smile and texted back, [Thanks.]
Felix replied, [Anytime.] and said no more.
I hesitated, unsure whether to talk to Thomas or walk away.
In the end, I chose to give up.
I knew Thomas all too well.
He rarely made decisions lightly or changed his mind once made.
If I go now, he'll likely reject me again. Why face that humiliation?
There was really no point.
I sat on the couch, completely spaced out, just killing time.
The doorbell rang, and I rushed to the door.
I rushed, tripped over my luggage, and fell hard.
"Ah!"
A sharp pain pierced my stomach.
I dropped to my knees, clutching my abdomen.
['Why does it hurt so damn much? Am I about to kick the bucket again?'] my son wondered.
['Oh my god, I'm just a baby! Don't do this to me!']
['Mom, please save me! I can't make it!']
The study door flew open as Thomas Chow rushed out, panic on his face, pushing his wheelchair.
Rushing, his wheel snagged the corner, and he crashed hard to the floor.
He didn't try to sit up, just crawled toward me using his hands.
