Chapter 5
Seeing that the ashes in the box had been completely emptied, Blair visibly breathed a sigh of relief.
Silas looked up at her and coaxed her softly, "Now that its ashes are gone, can you finally get a good night's sleep?"
The three of them held hands and walked out together sweetly.
Only after the three figures had completely disappeared from sight did Claire finally lose her temper and rush out crying.
Unfortunately, the weather turned bad, and it started to rain at that very moment, wetting the ashes that had been scattered by the wind, causing them to slowly drift away with the water.
Claire fell off her wheelchair and lay on the ground, trying to pick up the ashes bit by bit , but it was all in vain.
"My child, my child..."
by bit in the rain, and there was nothing she could do.
Her heart ached as if it were about to break, and she cried as she frantically reached for the muddy sewer.
She prayed to God that she could retain even a little bit of her child's memory, just a tiny bit.
Perhaps even the heavens took pity on her, for they actually managed to retrieve a small fragment of a bone.
She looked at the tiny bones in her palm, her heart breaking with pain.
This is her child, her baby.
She gently pressed the bone against her chest and cried her heart out.
After a long while, she got up from the ground, found the host, and had the small piece of bone polished into a pendant, which she then hung around her neck.
On her way home, she was soaked in the rain, pushing her wheelchair step by step in a disheveled state.
The pendant remained securely against her chest.
She stroked the pendant around her neck, repeating it over and over as if comforting a child, or perhaps herself.
"Don't be afraid, don't be afraid, we'll be together forever from now on."
When she got home, she was soaked to the bone and looked utterly disheveled.
When Silas and Leo saw her like this, they immediately rushed over to comfort her.
"Claire, where have you been? What happened to you and why are you in this state?"
Leo quickly grabbed a towel and ran towards her: "Mom, hurry up and wipe yourself off, you've caught a cold."
Watching the two busy at work, Claire could only picture them in the temple, coldly and heartlessly dumping the ashes.
Silas gently dried her hair, saying with concern, "Claire, it's not easy for you to walk now. In the future, wherever you want to go, just tell me, okay? No matter what I'm doing, I'll be with you."
"What would I do if something happened to you?"
She didn't answer, but silently watched the person in the mirror perform.
Suddenly, Silas's phone rang. He walked to the side to answer the call, and when he came back, his expression had changed.
"Claire, there's an urgent matter at the company that needs to be dealt with. You should rest at home and wait for me to come back and keep you company, okay?"
After saying that, he left in a hurry with Leo without waiting for her reply.
There's nothing that requires Leo to come along, except when it's to see Blair.
He had used such a lame excuse more than once; how come she hadn't noticed before?
It's better that they're not here, so she doesn't have to put on an act while watching their faces.
During her time alone at home, Claire was like a walking corpse, eating and drinking very little, and barely speaking.
What she did most often was stare blankly in the mirror, then cover the pendant on her chest with her hand and silently shed tears.
Until this day, her birthday, Silas specially held a grand banquet for her.
