Chapter 2
On the way to the Stella family's territory, my guards and I were ambushed.
A powerful male wolf suddenly appeared and saved me as I was cornered at the edge of a cliff.
That wolf was Jeremy. His strength was nothing to scoff at.
I wondered if he was hiding his true strength.
I didn't call him out on it.
I fixed Logan with a commanding stare. "Does a wolf who can't stay loyal to his mate deserve to be the leader of the pack?"
My gaze made Logan shrink back. He quickly lowered his head and bowed to me.
"Miss Lawrence, please don't be angry. At the wedding, we'll announce to the Moon Goddess that Jeremy is the true heir of the Stella family," he said.
I nodded in satisfaction.
Jeremy stared at me, then lowered his head and kissed my fingertips.
"I will never let you down, my fiancée," he promised.
I tossed the Moonstone, the token of my engagement to Jason, into the pool.
"Since my fiancé changed, the Moonstone should change, too," I said.
The next day, Jeremy and I headed to Moonridge to find our own Moonstone.
As we picked out our Moonstone in front of the Moon Goddess's statue, we ran into Jason and Selena.
Selena was clinging to his waist, her face full of flirtatious charm.
"It's all your fault. You were so rough last night. My legs are still sore," she teased, shooting Jason a playful look.
Jason crouched down, grinning, and gently took her foot in his lap, massaging it tenderly.
When he saw me, his face flickered with surprise, then turned to annoyance.
"Charlotte, you are like gum stuck to my shoe. How dare you send someone to spy on me?" Jason sneered.
I let out a cold laugh. "Don't flatter yourself. I'm here for the Moonstone."
Jason's face was full of mockery. "Stop pretending, Charlotte. Didn't we already pick out one for our wedding? Why are you here again?"
I didn't bother explaining to him. I wanted to rub it in his face at the wedding.
"If you can come to Moonridge with Selena, why can't I?" I shot back.
Jason's face flickered with guilt.
Selena immediately stepped in front of him, her eyes full of smug satisfaction.
"Miss Lawrence, I know Jason is about to marry you, but he's the only man I've ever wanted. I know I'll never have him, but I want to have a Moonstone that belongs to us," she said firmly.
She looked like a little bird that would never give in.
Jason immediately held her hand. His eyes were full of irritation as he looked at me.
"Charlotte, Selena's already so pitiful. I just want to have a Moonstone with her. You're not that petty, are you?" he said.
In the Wolf Pack, when a male wolf and his mate made their bond official by dripping their blood onto the Moonstone, the guy had to grant whatever wish his mate asked for.
To honor its significance, we always did this ritual at the wedding.
I never expected Jason to go through with it with Selena ahead of time. That meant they'd still be fooling around even after we were married.
What was the point of keeping a guy like that?
I smiled and nodded. "I'm not mad at all. It's your right to choose who you want to make a bond with."
After all, I'd already got a new fiancé.
Jason hadn't expected me to be so easygoing.
His furrowed brows instantly relaxed. "Glad you understand."
