Chapter 2
But my kindness ended up raising a viper in my midst.
In our senior year, she secretly used my name to hook up with Adrian West, the campus king from Veridonis.
She claimed to be the heiress of Lane Holdings, but sent him her own glam shots.
Just like in my previous life, today was the day she got Adrian's call about the car and begged me to go with her to meet him.
I agreed.
Three months later, Adrian really showed up at the school gate in that Ferrari.
Chloe clung to my arm, practically bouncing with excitement as we walked over to him.
But when Adrian called out "Rachel" to her, all dolled up, Chloe suddenly froze like a scared rabbit, acting as if she didn't know Adrian at all. She put on her most innocent, clueless face and pointed straight at me.
"You you must have the wrong person. She's Rachel Lane."
Adrian's expression turned ice-cold on the spot.
He thought I was the one who stole Chloe's photos and catfished him, and in his fury, he crushed my family without mercy.
Only after my parents and I jumped to our deaths in despair did Chloe finally show up before Adrian, tears streaming down her face as she played the victim and poured out her so-called "tragic story."
She sobbed, "Adrian, I was the one who was really talking to you online.
"I just felt so inferior. You come from such a powerful family, and I'm just a broke student with nothing. I was afraid you'd never even look at me, so I did something stupid and used Rachel's name instead.
"That day at the school gate, I pretended not to know you because I wanted to see if you liked me for who I am, or just because I was the heiress of the Lane Family."
Adrian, feeling all soft inside, pulled Chloe into his arms and popped the question right then and there.
He said, "From now on, you never have to pretend to be anyone else.
"Because in this world, there's no name more prestigious than Mrs. West."
What an absolutely heart-wrenching love story.
But all that so-called love was built atop the bodies of the three of us—my parents and me.
Chloe said, "Rachel, are you not saying anything because you don't want to go with me?"
'Chloe's voice jolted me back to reality,' Rachel thought.
I pulled my hand away, dodging her touch, expressionless.
"No, I don't want to," I replied coldly.
Her face changed instantly. She leaned in close, her voice gentle—so soft only the two of us could hear—but every word was sugar-coated poison.
Chloe whispered, "Are you jealous?
"Jealous that I've got Adrian, that he casually gives me a Ferrari, while you—Miss Lane herself—can't even get a boyfriend?"
Her eyes sparkled with malice.
She smirked, "Back then, you loved throwing cash at me and watching me thank you like you were some kind of saint. Felt good, didn't it?Now the tables have turned. Rachel, that sense of superiority you used to have? Gone, right?
"Now it's my turn to be on top. Rachel, that pathetic sense of superiority you used to have? It's completely shattered now, isn't it?"
"Are you done?" I asked.
Chloe was caught off guard by my calm reaction.
Before she could say another word, I pulled out my phone and called the butler William.
"William, cut off all financial support for Chloe right now. That includes her monthly supply of the special medication," I said.
William's steady voice came through the phone.
"Miss Lane, should I make this effective immediately?
"Miss Summers' next month's medication was scheduled for delivery tomorrow."
"Of course, make it effective immediately," I replied.
I watched as Chloe's face drained of color, my voice flat and cold.
"From this moment on, the Lane Family won't spend another dollar for her.
"Not a single pill will ever reach you again."
