Chapter 3
"Are we... married?"
I broke the silence in the hospital room, glancing over at Damon. He frowned, clearly irked by my question.
Sensing his irritation, I wisely kept quiet and pressed my lips together. Instead of responding, he gestured toward the coffee cup nearby.
"Would you like some coffee?"
My lips felt dry, so I nodded. He poured a cup and handed it to me. Too weak to hold it properly, I struggled as he merely held it out without offering help.
I coughed slightly, my hands shaking as I took the cup. After finishing the coffee, my curiosity got the better of me once more.
"Is our relationship troubled? Do you dislike me?"
He placed the cup back down with a cold chuckle. "You're more perceptive than I thought." He returned to his seat, choosing to focus on his phone instead of looking at me.
The room's atmosphere was strange and tense. I stared at the television for a while but couldn’t resist speaking again.
"Do you know how I ended up in the accident?"
His hand trembled slightly at this, and he looked up.
"Just concentrate on resting. You’ve just had surgery; you need more time to recover."
"Oh."
I eventually drifted off to sleep and woke up to find him still in the room. His fingers were busy scrolling through his phone, working.
I turned over, watching him intently. "Can't sleep?" he asked, his voice devoid of emotion. I nodded.
"Yeah, can you talk with me for a bit?"
His fingers never stopped moving; he merely gave a faint hum in response.
"If our relationship is so bad, why did we get married?"
He frowned slightly. "That's a question for you to answer. Out of everyone, you insisted on sticking with me."
"But Emory said we were childhood friends, that everyone always thought we'd end up married."
"If all the naïve people pretending to be charming are just looking for someone to rescue them, then congratulations, you succeeded."
He struck the keyboard forcefully. My chest tightened painfully.
So, his disdain for me overshadowed everything.
I quietly turned away from him, unable to stop the tears from falling.
A blue light flickered in my direction, pausing for a few seconds.
My trembling shoulders immediately stopped.
"My head hurts a bit. I shouldn’t stay up late. I’ll go to sleep now."
