Chapter 2
Chloe was so touched that she began to sob.
I sneered inwardly, sweeping my icy gaze over the servants.
I'd been far too lenient with them before, and now they'd forgotten who the real master of this house was.
I grabbed a cup and hurled it to the floor. Instantly, the servants' wary gazes locked onto me.
One said, "What's with you smashing the cup? Do you have any idea how much trouble it is to clean up?
"You have no consideration for others at all. You're not even worth a single hair of Chloe. If it weren't for your fancy family, no guy would ever look at you."
I strode over and slapped the one who'd spoken right across the face.
I sneered, "Oh, so you remember my family's status? And you know this is the Harrington residence?
"Listen up, every cent you make here comes from my brother Gavin. If you don't want the job, then get out, now!"
But to my utter shock, instead of cowering, they just laughed in my face.
They sneered. "Always acting like some high-and-mighty princess. Do you really think you're all that?"
"We're not leaving. What are you gonna do about it?"
"We're here to make sure Chloe's wedding is the most spectacular thing ever."
"Is there even a single person in this whole villa who actually listens to you? All you do is yell and make a scene."
"Once Chloe gets married, we'll all go work for her. You'll be left here all alone in this villa, haunted by ghosts every single night. That'll scare you to death, bitch!"
I was wondering why they were so gutsy.
Turned out they'd already set their sights on leaving the Harrington family and riding Chloe's coattails for good.
It made sense. If these people hadn't helped her out, Chloe never would've managed to successfully take my place and marry into the Moore family in my previous life.
My jaw was clenched tight with rage.
Chloe's mom, Brenda, shot me a venomous glare. "What are you looking at? You can't even appreciate the chances you get. Just wait. Once the Moore family gets tired of you, they'll dump you without a second thought."
"Mom, just ignore her. The wedding tomorrow is what really matters," Chloe said, giving me an apologetic look. "Selina, I didn't want things to turn out like this, but you were so petty today. Honestly, it really hurts."
"Chloe, don't waste your time on this loser. Let us help you set up your wedding room," other servants said.
The whole crowd swarmed around Chloe as they headed inside, and Chloe shot me a smug, taunting look over her shoulder.
I clenched my fists, feeling helpless. Even if I called Gavin now, it would be too late. All his trusted aides had gone abroad with him, and the people at the company were probably already taking orders from Chloe.
My phone pinged with a notification. 30 million had just landed in my account.
This was the wedding gift from Moore Group.
Right then, a plan formed in my mind. I headed out to a mall.
First, I splurged on a new house, and then snagged myself a car.
After spending the entire 30 million, I made my way to the police station.
The cop gave me a stunned look. "Come again? What did you say you're here for?"
"I tricked someone into marriage. I'm here to turn myself in," I said.
The cop frowned. "If you don't want to marry him, why not discuss breaking off the engagement?"
I pressed on. "The wedding's tomorrow, and I've already spent all the money they gave me as a wedding gift. But I don't want to go through the wedding."
"How much was it? Just work it out and return the money," the cop said.
"30 million," I replied.
The cop went quiet.
This wasn't just an ordinary wedding gift. It was an astronomical sum, the kind that left people speechless.
The cop wouldn't budge. He kept telling me to go sort it out with my future in-laws.
I'd heard all sorts of rumors about the guy I was supposed to marry. Word was, he had a pretty bad temper.
My hands were trembling as I took the phone from the cop, but to my surprise, the man on the other end sounded totally calm, not mad at all.
Then again, it made sense. This was just a marriage alliance, and we'd never met. The wedding wasn't announced to the public, so it wasn't really going to hurt Moore Group's reputation or anything.
"So you're really not going to marry me?" the man's voice came through the phone, calm and steady.
I answered quietly, "Yeah."
"Then let's call off the engagement," he replied.
After the cops got involved and helped us work things out, I was told I had to return all 30 million to Moore Group's account by noon tomorrow.
If I didn't, Moore Group would sue me.
I nodded, feeling pretty pleased with myself.
But instead of trying to get the money together, I spent the whole night letting loose at the bar, not giving a damn about anything.
The next day, I went home.
The villa was bursting with wedding decorations, and the yard was swarming with guests and staff hustling back and forth.
Not only were all Harrington Group's employees there, but even our old classmates had come, too.
They were all gathered around Chloe, showering her with compliments.
"Chloe, you're looking more gorgeous every year. Out of everyone in our class, you're the only one who's really successful now," one of them gushed.
"Yeah, guess we'll all be relying on you to take care of us in the future," another chimed in.
Even the staff couldn't help joining in.
"Everyone says Mr. Moore isn't into women, but Ms. Harrington sure knows how to handle him." One of them laughed.
"Better hold tight to Ms. Harrington's coattails from now on," another joked.
Listening to them, I gave a cold, mocking laugh.
She wouldn't be able to marry into the Moore family now. But she'd have to pay back that 30-million-dollar wedding gift.
