Chapter 2
I was out cold in the hospital for three days. When I opened my eyes, the first person I saw was my best friend, Grace Wynn.
She had heavy dark circles under her eyes. She looked exhausted. When she saw me wake up, her eyes lit up. "Joy, you're finally awake! I was freaking out. How do you feel?"
I hissed through my teeth, "It hurts! My head's killing me."
She said, "Of course it hurts. You split your head open. There was blood everywhere when they brought you in.
"That bastard Lucas is seriously ruthless. You're pregnant, and he still did something so cruel to you just for Renee? He should just go to hell."
Grace put a pillow behind my back while she kept cursing angrily, "I've never seen anyone so shameless. You were in a coma for three days, and as your husband, he only showed up once.
"He's been staying in that bitch Renee's room the whole time. Damn, his favoritism is off the charts. I'm so pissed off."
My head was splitting with pain. I didn't have the slightest memory of the people she mentioned.
I couldn't help asking her, "Who are Lucas and Renee?"
She froze. "You... Joy, what's wrong? Lucas is your husband."
My face went pale in shock. I forgot the pain. "My husband? I'm married?"
Grace looked at me like she'd seen a ghost. "You've been married for three years. Wait, what's going on? Did you lose your memory?"
I tried desperately to remember, but I couldn't recall having a husband at all.
Her eyes were practically popping out of her head as she stared at me in disbelief.
In the weird silence, the hospital room door opened.
A tall, incredibly handsome man in an expensive tailored suit walked in. He had long legs and a dark look on his face.
Behind him came a bald middle-aged man carrying a briefcase.
When the handsome man saw me, a hint of mockery flashed across his face. "About time you woke up, huh?"
That sounded strange. I looked him up and down. His face was dead gorgeous, just my type.
But his expression and his eyes made me uneasy.
He clicked his tongue when he saw me staring straight at him. Then he sat down on the couch with obvious impatience.
He gave me a cold look and said, "Jocelyn, since you're awake, there are some things I need to say to you. You were rude to Renee. I'll let it slide this time because you're pregnant.
"But you've been way out of line lately. I don't want you using your pregnancy to cause trouble and keep hurting innocent Renee. So I'm setting some ground rules for you."
As he finished, the bald man next to him opened his briefcase, pulled out two copies of a document, and handed them over.
"Mrs. Hart, this is the agreement Mr. Hart asked me to prepare. And this one is the divorce papers. If you can't follow the ground rules in the future, Mr. Hart will divorce you according to this agreement," the bald man said.
So this handsome man was the so-called husband of mine that Grace had just mentioned? Lucas?
I didn't remember him at all, and his cold, disgusted attitude didn't bother me one bit. But Grace, sitting next to me, was absolutely furious.
"Lucas, do you have no heart? Joy is pregnant. How could you treat her like this?" she snapped.
Lucas' cold expression didn't change one bit. "If she weren't pregnant, I would have made her go apologize to Renee already.
"I'm letting it slide because she's pregnant. But to stop her from going crazy over nothing again later, she has to follow these rules."
He kept defending Renee in every word. When he looked at me, there was no pity at all.
I was sure he had no feelings for me. I'd always been the type who put love above everything else.
I couldn't imagine marrying a man who didn't care about me at all.
It was a good thing I lost my memory and couldn't remember him. Otherwise, I thought his words would have driven me crazy with anger.
Grace was already shaking with anger next to me. I reached out and grabbed her hand just as she was about to go off on him.
In a hoarse voice, I said, "Let's skip the hassle. I'll sign the divorce papers."
