Chapter 3
"You motherfucking—" Ethan glared fiercely at Julia. Suddenly, he said, "You actually just reminded me of something."
"You're out of your mind," he said, curling his lips into a cold, thin smile. "Then off you go to a mental hospital to die."
But thinking again, fearing damage to his reputation, he added coldly, "A nursing home works too. Either way, dying's the same wherever you are."
Three years passed in the blink of an eye. On this day, the Glenn family of Mordyn held a grand party.
People whispered among themselves. "Why would the richest family marry a woman with no family background at all?"
"And I heard she's a country girl from a village."
"No way! How could the Glenn family stoop to marrying someone from the boondocks? That rumor's totally nonsense."
"I reckon the Glenns just want a woman to take care of their two three-year-old kids. Too bad for her."
The speaker then grinned teasingly. "He won't get hard to any woman he marries anyway."
The remarks that followed were even more offensive.
Not far away, Julia stood outside the crowd, her delicate, pretty face wearing a cool, indifferent expression.
A month ago, a friend from the nursing home said she'd arrange a marriage for her. A few days later, more than twenty people escorted her out of the nursing home. Waiting outside were over a dozen luxury cars.
She'd never imagined she'd be connected to the richest Glenn family.
This sudden wedding was planned in just a month, and even held at the Glenn family's own home. It wasn't frugality—it was extravagance. After all, the Glenns owned a sprawling forest villa.
All the guests today were either wealthy or influential, but across the entire venue, only a handful of the Glenn family members were visible. Instead, some uninvited people scrambled to come with gifts.
"Mrs. Glenn," Sherly, Julia's personal maid, noticed she was distracted. Thinking she minded her husband only appearing at the ceremony and then disappearing, she whispered comfortingly, "The company's been swamped lately. I saw Mr. Glenn head toward the study—he's probably busy with work."
Julia snapped out of her trance, glanced at her, and smiled faintly. "He can be as busy as he likes."
Lucas Glenn didn't want to marry her, and she felt the same.
The ceremony was the first time she'd met her nominal husband. Lucas was rumored to be cold-hearted, but in person, he was different from her imagination—especially his looks. He was breathtakingly handsome, like a flawless work of art.
Yet Julia couldn't appreciate this handsome man. Rumor had it that Lucas had been hurt by a woman before, and since then, he could never been turned on by women.
But that had nothing to do with her. Julia even thought it was for the best—they could keep their distance from now on.
She was about to leave when a voice suddenly reached her ears, freezing her in place. "Hey, buddy. Do you remember me? It's me—Ethan."
Her entire body stiffened, her calm expression shattered as if struck hard. Then she couldn't help trembling. She'd never forget this voice, even if she died.
She turned slowly. When she saw the man in front of her clearly, flames seemed to ignite in her eyes. Overwhelming hatred tore at her mind, and she almost instinctively lunged forward to tear him apart.
"Mrs. Glenn?" Sherly hurried to ask when she saw her state. "Are you okay?"
Julia's forward momentum halted at her words. She took a deep breath, struggling to calm her racing heart and resist the urge to punch Ethan.
At that moment, Ethan saw her too. He frowned, sizing her up doubtfully. Then he realized she looked familiar, but he couldn't recall who she was.
