Chapter 2
Yahya's eyes grew even more vicious, and he had no intention of stopping. Just as the bottle was about to hit me, someone crashed into him from behind. The crystal bottle dropped and shattered, and Yahya fell right onto the shards, yowling in pain.
The person who knocked him down rushed over to me, frantically checking me over to see if I was hurt. When she saw the wound on my head, her eyes were red with worry. I shook my head to let her know I was okay.
The one who knocked Yahya down was Myra Lewis, Yahya's former fiancée, and Andrew's little sister.
Yahya struggled to his feet, pain twisting his face, and tried to hit Myra, too. But Andrew grabbed his arm, stopping him cold.
"Don't you dare lay a finger on my sister. I'll make her apologize to you," Andrew said.
Andrew pulled Myra away from me, instructing her as they left.
"Myra, now that we're back, forget about marrying Yahya. He's going to marry Sophie, and I'll make sure you find a good family. But first, apologize to Yahya. Otherwise, I can't guarantee who you'll end up with," Andrew said.
He really knew how to play his cards. One moment it was sweet talk, the next it was two slaps, and then came a threat.
Myra struggled, refusing to leave, gripping my hand as her life depended on it.
"I'm not something for you to give away. I'm already married," she snapped.
Andrew and Yahya both stared at her, stunned, and blurted out together.
"What? You're married?"
Myra nodded.
"Of course. I'm forty-three. Do you really think I'd still be single? Are you guys out of your minds?" she shot back.
Yahya's face twisted with rage.
"Myra, you were engaged to me. How could you just go and marry someone else?" he shouted.
Myra was so stunned by his nonsense that she burst out laughing.
"Engaged? You were dead and out of the picture. What does that engagement even matter now? Jayleen set me up with my husband, and he's a million times better than you," Myra shot back.
Andrew's face darkened.
"What kind of family could Jayleen possibly find for you? Probably just some nobodies. How could we let them climb up to the Lewis family? Divorce him now, and I will find you a better match," Andrew said.
Myra was no longer the little girl who would be too scared to leave her room at his words. She kicked over the coffee table, sending glass shattering across the floor and causing the three people to scramble out of the way.
"Andrew, who the hell do you think you are? You ditched your family and your wife for years. Did you ever care about us at all? Where were you when everything went to hell?
"Where were you when Mom and Dad got sick, when the shareholders tried to kick us out of the company? And now you just show up, thinking you can butt into my life? You're dreaming.
"If it hadn't been for Jayleen holding down the fort, our whole family would've been picked clean to the bone," Myra shot back.
Andrew tried to make excuses.
"I don't know such a thing would happen back then. We've been stuck out on that fishing island for years, just scraping by on whatever we could catch. Folks out there are honest. Nobody gives a damn about all that cutthroat business drama," he said.
Rosalie had already brought over the first aid kit and was tending to my wounds.
Holding the gauze to my wound, I looked up and caught Andrew's gaze.
"Just saying you didn't know doesn't make it all go away," I said.
Myra cut in, her voice trembling with fury.
"Jayleen and I had to go around begging for favors just to keep the company afloat. We put up with creeps, got harassed, and were forced to drink until we puked. All this crap was because of you.
"If you'd just said you wanted to chase after your so-called true love and given Mom and Dad a heads-up, maybe we wouldn't have had to go through all that hell. The three of you make me sick."
