Chapter 2
Dylan froze. He really had forgotten.
When we got married, he claimed he wanted the best for me and bought the most expensive mansion in the city.
On closing day, he looked at me lovingly and called it our forever home.
He thought the house was in his name.
He didn't know I had my lawyer buy the property in full under my name right before he signed.
He only signed a three-year lease. And today, that lease expired.
"What kind of nonsense are you talking about?" Dylan snapped, his face turning red with anger. "I bought this house.
"When did it become yours? Are you losing your mind just to get more money out of me?"
Connor scoffed. "Ms. Jennings, playing dumb won't work. It's all in black and white. Don't try to scam us."
I didn't waste another breath on them. I just snapped my fingers.
The heavy double doors swung open. A dozen bodyguards in black suits filed into the room.
Leading them was Charles, my family's longtime butler.
He bowed respectfully. "Miss, I am so sorry you had to deal with this."
Dylan and Connor were completely stunned.
"Who the hell are you people? Who let you in?" Dylan yelled, trying to hide his panic.
Charles ignored him and waved a hand. Two bodyguards stepped forward and grabbed Dylan.
"Throw these two trespassers out," I ordered. My voice was calm but clear.
"Let go of me! You crazy bitch!" Dylan struggled violently.
Connor's legs gave out from fear. He trembled and begged Dylan to save him.
But they were no match for highly trained bodyguards.
Just as Dylan was being dragged to the door, his phone rang.
The sound pierced the tense silence.
He struggled to pull his phone from his pocket. When he saw the caller ID, his face lit up.
He said, "It's the bank manager! You are so dead, Sierra! My accounts..."
He froze. Whatever the person on the line said wiped the smugness right off his face. He turned deathly pale.
"What do you mean all my accounts are frozen? How is that possible?! You're calling in the loans? Why?" Dylan sputtered.
He hung up, and his phone rang again.
It was his father, Trevor Reed, the chairman of Reed Group.
The second he answered, Trevor's furious roar blasted through the speaker. "Dylan, you idiot! Who the hell did you cross?! Every single partner just pulled out! Our stock crashed the second the market opened!"
Dylan gripped his phone with shaking hands. He stared at me in terror, like he didn't even know me.
I casually took a ring from Charles and slipped it on. It was a massive canary diamond. It sparkled brilliantly under the chandelier.
There was only one like it in the entire world, aptly named "The One."
It was a one of a kind piece. A mysterious billionaire named Lancaster recently bought it at an auction for an astronomical price.
Dylan wanted to buy it for Eliza, but his entire net worth couldn't even cover the starting bid.
I smirked at him. "I forgot to tell you. The largest shareholder of Reed Group isn't a Reed. It's a Jennings."
They threw Dylan out onto the street like a stray dog. Peace and quiet at last.
I sat on the sofa while Charles poured me a cup of black coffee.
The steam drifted through the air, wiping away the lingering stench of Dylan and his drama.
I closed my eyes. Memories of the last three years played in my mind.
I first met Dylan three years ago at a charity gala.
He was the city's newest hotshot, confident and surrounded by people. I was just a quiet guest in the corner.
Our meeting was a setup.
My car accidentally rear ended his. He looked annoyed when he stepped out.
But he froze the moment he saw me. He later claimed it was love at first sight.
I actually bought it.
I hid my identity as the Jennings heiress for that fairy tale romance. I pretended to be a regular orphan and played the devoted wife for three long years.
I foolishly thought my love and sacrifices would be enough for him to see my worth.
I thought I could find true love without my family's money.
Looking back now, I was so naive it was almost pathetic.
