Chapter 6
Suddenly, the office door swung open.
I looked up and saw Lucas.
He came over to me, one step at a time.
I kept my eyes down and headed for the sofa.
Lucas walked right past me, and we didn't exchange a single word.
I thought Lucas was here to talk about the divorce agreement, but instead, he just sat at his desk, tapping his keyboard for a while without saying a word.
I took a deep breath and asked quietly, "Where's your lawyer? What needs to be changed in the agreement?"
Lucas looked up, thunder in his eyes. Like I'd said the wrong thing.
Lucas felt a fire raging in his chest, and no matter what he did, he just couldn't put it out.
He reached over and pressed the intercom. He said, "Henry, bring in the agreement."
It didn't take long before the layer, Henry Lee, showed up in the office.
Henry studied Lucas's expression, then cautiously handed over the agreement. He said, "Mr. Sterling, here's the revised agreement."
Lucas waved his hand and said, "Give it to her."
Only then did Henry turn to me and hand me the agreement.
I took it without even glancing at it. I said, "Just tell me what changed. I don't have the patience to read it."
Henry said, "The original seven million has been replaced with 10% equity in Sterling Group. Plus two villas, four city-center penthouses, and ten premium residences spread across the metro. Wherever you land, you're covered."
Leave it to Lucas to pay back a favor like a king settling a tab.
I smiled and said, "Transfer everything to my dad's name."
That made Lucas suddenly look up, his eyes locked on me in surprise.
Before today, Lucas had no idea that I was already aware of the favor my dad had done for him.
But at that moment, he probably guessed I knew.
I didn't look at him, but I asked, "Is that okay?"
Lucas didn't say a word for ages.
I started to think he was going to say no, almost opened my mouth to ask again, when finally he spoke.
He looked at Henry and said, "Go draw up a new agreement."
After Henry left, it was just Lucas and me in the office.
But neither of us said a word.
Maybe it was just me, but Lucas looked kind of agitated, like he had something on his mind, but in the end, he didn't say a thing.
After a moment, Henry came back in.
He spread the agreement out in front of me and said, "Ms. Quinn, just let me know if you want anything else changed."
I didn't even glance at it. I grabbed the pen and signed my name without a second thought.
When I was done, Henry took the agreement and handed it over to Lucas.
As Lucas was about to sign, I asked, "So, can we go get the divorce certificate now?"
His pen paused, then suddenly ripped right through the paper.
A few seconds later, Lucas looked up at me and asked, "Did you even check the last section of the agreement?"
I was getting impatient. I snapped, "Nope. What's the issue? If you're just looking for an excuse not to pay..."
Lucas cut me off. He said, "That's not it. If we get divorced, I get full custody of Shawn. You'll never see him again."
Never see him again? But "never" was longer than I had.
"Fine," I said, not even blinking.
Lucas's pen snapped in his hand.
His face looked awful, like he'd just been hit. He asked, "Are you really sure about this?"
I shot back, cool as ice, "Isn't this exactly what you've been waiting for? Why bother asking? Does it even matter to you if I'm sure or not?"
Lucas rose to his feet, his expression icy. "It really doesn't matter," he said, voice cold and distant.
Lucas was sitting in his car, waiting for me.
I shot a look at the passenger seat, but didn't get in. "I'll just grab a cab," I said.
Lucas snapped, "I don't have time to wait around for you. We're about to get divorced, so why do you still care who's been in my passenger seat?"
Sophia had sat in that seat before, and to me, it just felt dirty.
Turns out Lucas knew exactly what was eating at me.
Maybe he got every little thing I fussed over in this relationship, but he just never cared enough to do anything about it.
I opened the car door and got in.
As he said, it just didn't matter anymore.
Not a single word passed between us the whole ride.
When I got my marriage certificate, I was filled with hope. But when I was about to get my divorce certificate, I just felt hollow inside.
There were so many stories in this world that began but never found closure.
Turned out, I was no exception.
