Chapter 4
After everything was out in the open, Edward didn't bother to hide anything anymore.
He was always over at Briella's place, only dropping by home once in a while.
At dinner, Edward looked at me with an unreadable gaze. "You seem different lately."
I curled my lips into a faint smile. "Oh? Maybe it's just because you haven't been around much. Everyone changes, right?"
Edward nodded approvingly, clearly satisfied. "Honestly, you should've started putting yourself first a long time ago. We've got plenty of money now, so just live however you want and do whatever makes you happy."
I nodded, totally on board with what he said.
Yeah, I really should've started doing this a long time ago.
I figured Edward would leave after dinner, but to my surprise, he actually stuck around.
He put his arm around my shoulders, and unexpectedly, there was guilt in his eyes. "Julia, let's have a baby."
My heart seized up all of a sudden.
There was a time when all I wanted was a baby and a real family of my own.
Every time Edward said it wasn't the right time, I lost another baby. Three miscarriages later, getting pregnant was nearly impossible for me.
And now, after he had Briella, he suddenly wanted a baby with me.
What's this supposed to be? Was he trying to make it up to me, or was it just some kind of pity handout?
I jerked his hand off me and glared at him coldly. "Don't touch me. You disgust me."
Edward's face instantly darkened. "Julia, I'm giving you a way out here. What more do you want? I already said I'd give you a baby. Why can't you just let it go?"
I let out a cold, mocking laugh and looked at Edward with open disdain. "Don't you think you're being ridiculous? A baby? You really think that's supposed to make things right? I couldn't care less."
Edward's eyes flashed with fury. "Don't act like you don't know what's good for you. If it weren't for our history, I'd just have Briella give me a child.
"She's younger than you, and her womb isn't a graveyard. She'd get pregnant way easier than you ever could."
Leave it to Edward to know exactly how to twist the knife in my heart.
Swallowing the bitterness, I shot him a mocking look. "Fine, then go ahead and have Briella give you a baby."
Edward grabbed his coat and shot me a vicious glare. "Don't you dare regret this."
I turned my head away, ignoring him completely.
Regret? If there's one thing I regretted in my whole damn life, it was marrying him.
It was as if he wanted to punish me. After that day, Edward didn't come back at all.
Normally, I'd be calling and texting him nonstop, but this time, I didn't even send a word to him.
Edward Miller's POV
Edward was holding Briella in his arms, but he suddenly felt uneasy inside.
Briella shot him a disgruntled look. "Thinking about that old woman again, aren't you? I'm really mad now."
Edward let out a soft laugh. "Relax, babe. She just hasn't messaged me, so I'm a little worried."
"What's there to worry about? Didn't you say you wanted an open marriage? For all you know, maybe she's out there living it up."
Edward pushed Briella aside, his face clouded with anger as he glared at her. "Shut up. Julia's heart belongs to our family and me. Don't project your own way of living onto her."
Briella gaped at him, stunned, her eyes suddenly filling with tears.
Edward was just about to comfort her when the doorbell suddenly rang.
The delivery guy handed Edward a document.
When Edward saw that it was the divorce papers, he actually felt a wave of relief.
He whipped out his phone and dialed a number. "Julia, even if you can't swallow your pride, you really don't have to mail me divorce papers just to drag me back home, you know? Chill, I'll swing by tomorrow."
But in the very next moment, his expression froze.
On the other end, a voice he didn't recognize answered, "Hey, sorry, Julia's in the shower right now. She'll call you back when she's done."
