After ten long years, Benjamin Carter and I finally crossed the finish line of our marathon love story. Right after we got the marriage license—and with Christmas just around the corner—we decided to take a break and fly to the Northeast to chase snowstorms and maybe catch the Northern Lights. On the third day up in the mountains, a blizzard rolled in out of nowhere and pinned us on the ridge. Benjamin went off alone to look for help. Except… he didn't come back with help. He returned carrying a mute girl. She was delicate, trembling like a baby deer in winter. Benjamin immediately handed her my tent without a second thought. She looked half-starved, so he gave her the last of my food. And when she cast a single pitiful glance at my brand-new wedding ring—yeah, the one I'd barely worn for a week—Benjamin slipped it off my finger and offered it to her like some knight in a bargain-bin soap opera. "Everything you're wearing, I paid for," he said. "If Zoe wants it, you give it to her." I stared at Benjamin as a slow, icy smile curled at my lips. "If she wants anything of mine, I should give it to her? Fine." I stepped back, snow crunching under my boots, and locked eyes with him. "You know what? Take you. I don't want you anymore. Why don't I throw you in as well? Maybe that'll be enough for her."
