Chapter 2
Thomas was clearly heartbroken. Even though I was sobbing my heart out, he didn't try to comfort me at all. Instead, he just looked at me with that cold, unreadable expression.
I wiped my tears away, ready to start an argument, when suddenly there was a knock at the door.
Thomas wheeled over and opened the door.Outside stood his junior colleague, Felix Chee.
Felix grinned and greeted me, "Hi, sis-in-law!" Then he turned to Thomas Chow.
"Thomas, you ready? Let's get going," Felix said.
"Yeah," Thomas replied with a slight nod.
'Luggage?'
'Leaving?' I wondered, my mind spinning.
I glanced around and finally spotted a suitcase by the coffee table. My heart skipped a beat.
"What are you doing?" I blurted out.
Felix quickly explained, "Yara, the boss asked me to go with Thomas to a conference out of town. We'll be gone for about a week."
My voice was thick with tears as I asked Thomas, "Are you coming back here?"
We were just dating, after all. If he wanted to break up, all he had to do was say the word, and there was nothing I could do to stop him.
Felix sensed something was off. His eyes widened in surprise, and he clammed up, not saying another word.
Thomas gave me a long, cold look before answering, "Yes."
Judging by his expression, he was still hung up on what happened earlier. But there was no time to clear things up now. We'd have to talk it out over the phone, or just wait until he got back to discuss it face to face.
"You better keep your word!" I said, my voice trembling.
"Yeah," he replied, pausing for a moment before adding, "Just think carefully about what I said. Whatever you decide, I'll respect it."
I was pissed, but there was nothing I could do.
Once a rift forms, it's not easy to mend.
In Thomas's mind, those lace panty had nothing to do with him. He probably thought I was the one who tossed them in the trash and then tried to accuse someone else of what I did.
I felt like I was swallowing my own bitterness, unable to explain myself.
'Damn that girl!' I cursed inwardly.
I walked Thomas and Felix out to the front gate. Once their rideshare picked them up and drove off, I headed straight to the nearby pharmacy for a pregnancy test.
As soon as I got home, I grabbed the test and rushed into the bathroom.
Just as I expected, the result was clear, two bright red lines staring back at me.
The last time I had my period was two and a half months ago.
My cycle was always all over the place, and sometimes it just skipped altogether when I was stressed out.
Two months ago, Thomas was in a car accident that damaged his nerves, leaving him paralyzed from the knees down.
Ever since then, I'd been a nervous wreck, barely eating and losing a couple of pounds. So when my period didn't show up, I never even thought I might be pregnant.
Who would've thought I actually got pregnant?
Thomas was actually a kind and soft-hearted guy. For the sake of the baby, I figured he probably wouldn't just dump me.
I was planning to ask about that girl, once he woke up. But the sleep he fell into that day turned out to be endless.
Now that I knew I was pregnant, I was torn between telling Thomas right away or waiting until he got back.
After thinking it over, I decided to tell him now, not giving that girl any chance to stir up trouble.
I sent him a pic of the pregnancy test.
He was probably on a flight, so he didn't reply for three hours. When he finally did, he just asked, "Are you sure?"
It was just a text message, no way to tell what he was really feeling. If anything, he came off pretty cold.
I tried to ignore how uneasy I felt and texted back.
"I tried two different brands, both came out positive."
I sent him the photo of another test again.
The typing indicator flashed for almost a minute before his message appeared.
"What are you thinking?" he asked.
He seemed unhappy. Anger rose, but I recalled the misunderstanding and stayed calm.
"Let's get the marriage license first. I don't want to have a baby before we're officially married," I replied.
Before Thomas's accident, we were just about to make it official.
But after he got paralyzed, the whole thing got postponed.
I asked him last week when we'd go get the license, and he said to wait a little longer.
I knew he was feeling pretty low, so I didn't push him.
I wanted to wait for his better mood, but that unknown girl showed up and started messing with us.
He stayed silent nearly three minutes before replying.
"My legs might stay like this for life. Tying the knot is a big deal, so think it through," he said.
"Just take a few days and really think it over. We'll figure things out when I'm back," he added.
I couldn't tell if he said that in anger or if he cared.
Either way, those words made me see red.
"Suit yourself! Don't want it? Fine, I'll drop it!" I snapped.
I'll have this baby and raise it on my own.
I was so mad, I blocked him everywhere, phone, chat, you name it.
