Chapter 2
Henry Porter, quite good for nothing, was Mary's son. In a smart suit, he lazily walked downstairs.
With contempt on his face, he shot me one glance. "You are just a maid. How dare you talk nonsense here! I will give you sixty thousand dollars, so get lost right away."
He pulled a black card out of his wallet and threw it to the floor. "Take it and get lost."
He looked down upon me as if he were an emperor.
I ridiculed inwardly, 'Well, here comes the good-for-nothing. Sixty thousand dollars? What a large sum of money! However, I just earned 300 thousand dollars, so your offer doesn't interest me.
'Besides, does your bank card still work? Last week, you lost ten million dollars in Las Vegas. Have you paid off the debt?'
The system: [Ding! Your urge to toast has been detected. Please speak your mind.]
I shifted my gaze to the black card on the floor, bent down, and picked it up.
Henry had a smirk on his face.
Thinking that money was everything, both Mary and Grace breathed a sigh of relief.
I held the card, walked to Henry, and stuffed it into the pocket of his shirt. Then, I saw astonishment in his eyes.
"Mr. Porter, thanks, but you had better keep the card to yourself," I said.
I leaned in close and said in a voice only he could hear, "It's quite courageous to take out a supplementary card after your bank account has been frozen."
Henry changed his expression in an instant.
The smirk on his face was replaced by fear and shock. "You... Why do you know that?"
I gave him a smile, and I didn't answer his question.
I raised my voice so the others in the living room could hear me. "Mr. Porter, you are so generous to offer me sixty thousand dollars, but I can't take the money.
"I advise you to pay off your debt, ten million dollars in Las Vegas last week, as soon as possible, or the loan sharks will show up at the door next month. Then, you will get more than several texts."
This piece of information was like a bomb to the others in the living room.
Mary sprang to her feet and glared at Henry. "What did you say? Ten million dollars?"
David Porter, the head of the Porter family, had been silent till now. He finally put down his newspaper, and his face had become livid. "Henry, did you gamble again?"
Henry was completely freaked out. He pointed at me and shouted, "Nonsense! You bitch, how dare you slander me!"
'Alas, you are breaking down. How fragile you are! Are you asking for evidence? The texts you received from the loan sharks yesterday are still in your phone. Do you want me to read them out for your sake?' I thought.
I pulled my phone out of my pocket and said, "Mr. Porter, relax. Shall we call your friend for confirmation right now? I remember that his name is... Jimmy Black?"
Instantly, Henry's face became as white as a sheet.
Henry slumped to the floor in despair and shouted, "Dad, Mom, I am sorry. I will never gamble again."
In the blink of an eye, the oppression on Ada became the trial of Henry.
As for me, the troublemaker, I quietly retreated into a corner.
Ada stole a glance at me. In her eyes, there was shock and... 'A bit of admiration?' I wondered.
The system: [Ding! You have helped Ada out by shifting the attention of her family. The reward for this small victory is a Mind Reading Card. You can use it on whoever you choose. It will be effective for 24 hours.]
'A new skill?' I wondered.
My gaze landed on Grace, who played innocent all the time.
'Let me try it on you,' I thought.
The system: [Use the Mind Reading Card on Grace.]
Soon after the robotic voice disappeared, I heard Grace's inner voice.
Grace wiped the non-existent tears away with her handkerchief while she took one look at the chaos with worry.
She thought, 'What a good-for-nothing! Henry is so foolish that he can do nothing right. Who the hell is this new maid? Why does she know so many things? Since she does, I will have to kick her away.
'As for Ada, that bitch, how dare she glare at me! I will teach her a good lesson after I get her kidney and marry Brian Kane.'
I inwardly marveled at what I had heard. 'Oh my! Grace is much more wicked than I thought. She could win an Oscar if she worked in the showbiz.'
Furious, David took off his belt.
Soon, Henry's wails echoed through the house.
Mary was worried about her son and mad at his foolishness at the same time. It was very chaotic in the house.
Grace didn't open her mouth till she saw her chance. "Dad, Mom, don't blame Henry. The whole mess must be a lapse in judgement."
She walked to David and softly held his arm. "Our priority is to pay off the debt for Henry. As for the maid..."
She changed the subject as she gave me her menacing gaze. "She knows too many things, so we shouldn't keep her here."
'That's it. Make this bitch the center of attention. She is just a maid. It is easy to dismiss her with an excuse. Besides, there are ways to make her shut up forever,' she thought.
Hearing her inner voice, I almost burst out laughing.
'To make me shut up? You may try, of course,' I thought.
Looking Grace in the eyes, I pretended to be scared. "Miss Grace, I... I am just a maid. I know nothing, so don't dismiss me, please."
Grace had a look of triumph in her eyes after I surrendered to her threat.
'Glad that you know what is good for you. However, it is too late,' she thought.
However, she said, "Summer, I don't want to do this, but what you said is so hurtful to Mom. Besides, you sow discord in our family. We, the Porter family, don't tolerate the wicked people like you."
