Chapter 4
I pulled out my phone, brought up the photo of the shopping receipt, and waved it in her face.
"The second one's half price. Ms. Lane, looks like you really are a bargain," I sneered.
Sophie's face went ghostly pale.
She clutched the gift box, her lips trembling, unable to get a single word out.
Outside the office, a crowd of nosy colleagues had gathered, pointing and whispering about us.
"Goddammit." Michael's furious shout rang out from the back of the crowd as he shoved people aside and stormed in.
He snatched the gift box from Sophie's hands and hurled it to the floor.
Black lace lingerie spilled out, looking like a broken, ugly flower scattered across the ground.
"Emily, are you freaking insane?" Michael's eyes were blazing red as he jabbed a finger at me. "Do you even know this is the office? You're making me look like a complete fool."
"A fool?" I scoffed, sweeping my eyes over the crowd of coworkers. "Did you feel embarrassed when you brought that intern home and hooked up with her on our marriage bed?
"Did you feel embarrassed when you two got freaky in the bathroom, leaving handprints all over the mirror?
"Did you feel embarrassed when you blew our hard-earned money buying her knockoff bracelets and sexy underwear, snagging those second-item half-price deals?"
With every word I said, Michael's face grew even paler.
The chatter around us exploded.
"Damn, is this for real? Things are getting wild," one whispered.
"I knew Sophie's bracelet was fake. Mr. Grant gave her a knockoff? That's hilarious," another chimed in.
"Emily's got some serious guts, storming into the office like that. She's a total badass," a third voice added.
Sophie was sobbing so hard she could barely breathe, collapsing into Michael's arms, looking completely helpless.
"Mr. Grant, I swear I didn't mean for any of this to happen. Emily has got it all wrong about me," she choked out between sobs.
Michael wrapped his arms around her protectively, but when he turned to face me, his eyes were filled with nothing but contempt.
He wiped the water from his face, his expression twisted with rage as he barked at the crowd, "What are you all staring at? Get back to work."
Then he jabbed a finger at me, trying to turn the tables. "You all saw it. This woman is a psycho. Jealous to the core, spying on me every day, and now she's barged in here to put on some crazy drama queen act.
"Where's security? Security. Get this troublemaker out of here."
Seeing him in such a pathetic, frantic state, I felt an unexpected calm settle over me.
I pulled something else out of my bag and slapped it down on his desk.
It was a divorce agreement.
"Sign it," I said.
My voice was completely calm.
I said, "The house and car are my pre-marital assets. Half the savings will cover the bags and bracelets for Ms. Lane. You get nothing from me."
Michael stared at the divorce papers like he'd just been struck by lightning, completely frozen in place.
"Divorce?" he muttered, disbelief written all over his face. "You're really divorcing me over something this trivial?"
"Trivial?" I laughed, almost crying. "Michael, in your eyes, is betrayal and lying just nothing?"
"I just made the same mistake every man makes," he blurted out, getting all worked up. "I still love you. I just messed up for a moment. Can't you just let it slide, just this once?"
"Forgive you?" I stepped forward, grabbed the glass of water Sophie had just poured for me, and without hesitation, threw it right in his face.
"Why don't you go beg God for forgiveness, dumbass?" I spat.
