I nodded. "I still have shares in the company, and I'm planning to sell them. If you're willing to buy them, I won't have to look for another buyer."

Alex laughed. "Seriously? You're quitting because of her?"

I looked at him in silence.

Alex's smile faded. "Lily, buying out your shares isn't something that happens overnight.

"The end of the year is the busiest time for the company. If we bring in a new executive assistant now, can you take the heat if something goes wrong?

"Once the year's over and you find a suitable replacement, I'll let you go.…
