Chapter 2
Series 1 Chapter 2
Chloe yanked the HDMI cable from her tablet with such frantic force that she knocked a jar of markers off the podium.
Plastic pens scattered across the linoleum floor with sharp, clattering thuds.
The smart board flickered blue before going completely dark, but the message remained seared into everyone's memory.
"I... I am so terribly sorry, everyone," Chloe stammered.
Her voice squeaked as she clutched the tablet to her chest like a shield. She forced a strained, high-pitched laugh that sounded like scraping glass.
"That was just... a ridiculous prank. An old college buddy playing a joke on me. You know how guys are with their group chats. Please, let's not pay any attention to that silly mistake."
A prank.
A college joke that conveniently referenced my husband's fake overtime excuse, my eight-year-old son, and my exact first name.
The room remained dead quiet. No one laughed. No one nodded.
Principal Evans took a slow step forward from the back of the classroom, his arms crossed over his chest, his jaw set in a rigid, unforgiving line.
To my left, Sarah Gable, the head of the PTA, shifted awkwardly in her seat, staring at her lap to avoid looking in my direction.
Chloe smoothed her floral skirt with damp, shaking palms. "Now... as I was saying about our third-grade reading goals for the semester..."
She actually believed she could smile her way out of this.
She thought that because I was the quiet, dignified children's book illustrator who always brought homemade treats to school fundraisers, I would swallow the humiliation to avoid making a scene.
She assumed my silence meant submission.
I didn't yell. I didn't interrupt her stuttering explanation. I simply let her drown in the suffocating awkwardness for ten full seconds.
Then, I reached down and picked up my travel mug.
I set it back down on the tiny wooden desk with a crisp, resonant clack.
The small sound cut through Chloe's voice like a razor.
I stood up slowly, smoothing the hem of my tailored camel trench coat.
"No need to apologize for the interruption, Ms. Harper," I said. My voice was smooth, measured, and carried effortlessly across the silent room.
Chloe froze mid-sentence, the fake smile melting off her face. "Mrs. Vance... Claire... we can talk privately after the presentation -- "
"Why wait?" I interrupted gently, tilting my head. "Since Mark is working so tirelessly at his emergency client meeting, it's only right we check in on him together."
Under the breathless gaze of thirty-two parents and the school principal, I unlocked my phone.
I tapped Mark's contact.
And with a light tap of my finger, I switched the call to speakerphone.
