Chapter 2
Ryan couldn't really argue with his own logic, so he only muttered, "But Lucas is innocent, what if something goes wrong?"
Lucas was hardly innocent.
He bullied rookie actors, and he even had blood on his hands.
Previously, even though he knew his surgery had gone perfectly, he still let Emily whisper poison into his ear. He led his fans to mob me online until I died a miserable death.
He was not innocent. If anything, it served him right to have Emily looking after him.
He needed to pay the price for what he'd done, and while we were at it, sending a fool like Emily out of the hospital would save a whole lot of people down the road.
So not only did I feel there was nothing wrong with this arrangement—I thought it was perfect.
But I kept those thoughts to myself and just played along with Ryan, acting all thoughtful. "I'm not too concerned, but it never hurts to be careful.
"How about this—I'll transfer Lucas to you. You can take the lead and guide Emily yourself. That way you won't keep saying I'm careless and impatient."
My reasoning was airtight, and Ryan couldn't poke a hole in it. So he had no choice but to accept the hot potato I handed him.
But barely a day after taking over, I overheard him in the office, sounding completely exasperated. "Emmy, what kind of patient chart is this? How did you not even record his bathroom breaks?"
When I heard that, I nearly burst out laughing. Because I had asked her the exact same question last time, and her answer left me speechless then, too.
Just like before, Emily blushed and said shyly, "I'm a lady. How am I supposed to ask a man about those things?
"Besides, Lucas isn't a regular patient. He's a celebrity. Talking about that would embarrass him."
I knew Ryan far too well. He only spoiled Emily because I had always cleaned up her mess. The moment it touched his own bottom line, there was no way he'd keep indulging her.
Seeing Ryan start to wonder whether Emily should keep looking after Lucas, I quickly stood up. "Mr. Shaw, give Emmy a little grace.
"She didn't really do anything wrong, and Lucas isn't just some regular patient. If you handle it yourself, there won't be any awkwardness, and it'll show you're taking his case seriously.
"So why don't you ask him yourself?"
Ryan was so stunned he didn't even know what to say.
If any other junior doctor had done this, he would've blown up on the spot. But because it was Emily, he'd originally planned to take the easy way out and shove the problem back onto me.
And I did help him—just not the way he expected. I swallowed my disgust and gently patted Emily on the shoulder. "Don't worry, Emmy. Ryan isn't blaming you.
"He's just a clueless dude. He'll never get what's going on in your head. How about this? Ryan and I will go with you together and ask Lucas.
"Who knows, Lucas might think you're super professional and be totally impressed."
With me smoothing things over, the three of us headed into Lucas' premium VIP ward.
Ryan's face was thunderous as he asked questions he should've never had to ask himself.
After Lucas finished answering, he couldn't stop singing Emily's praises. "Dr. Dawson is honestly the sweetest, most thoughtful doctor I've ever met.
"I used to be terrified of staying in the hospital, but she made this cold place feel warm. I'm really not scared anymore."
Ryan's expression eased a little. He opened the gauze on Lucas' chest to check the wound, and his face darkened again. "What's going on? Why hasn't his dressing been changed?"
Emily's face turned even redder. "It's just... I mean, I'm a lady and he's a guy. Isn't it kind of awkward for me to just go and touch him like that?
"And it's not like I wouldn't change it. I was just a few hours late, that's all."
