Chapter 2
Thank goodness.
My baby survived.
I heard the very first cry she made when she came into this world.
After I died, my soul hovered above, watching everything unfold.
I saw my husband, Henry, comforting Evelyn, who was sobbing uncontrollably, right in front of my coffin.
Once my body was cremated, Henry shamelessly took over the company I'd poured my heart and soul into, as if it had always belonged to him.
Evelyn cried and begged him to make her official, and Henry gave her exactly what she wanted.
He threw her a wedding for the ages.
After that, they took my fortune and traveled the world, living it up as a picture-perfect couple everyone envied.
Meanwhile, my child was dumped on a young female servant who hadn't even been married herself.
Every time my baby cried, the servant would instinctively clamp a hand over her mouth until she finally drifted off to sleep.
For me, it felt like my heart was being ripped to shreds, but I was powerless to stop any of it.
It wasn't until they got back from their honeymoon that things got even worse.
The servant had taken time off to visit her hometown, so Evelyn had no choice but to look after the baby herself.
But when the baby started wailing from hunger, Evelyn freaked out like she'd seen a ghost.
She shoved the crying baby into the fridge, her eyes all red as she rushed into Henry's arms. "Her crying is so scary. It's freaking me out. Honey, can we just let her chill out in there for a while?"
"No, you monster!" I wailed, throwing myself at her, but my hands just passed right through her.
Utterly crushed, I could only keep whispering through the fridge door, trying again and again to comfort my baby. "Don't cry, sweetie. Mommy's here."
"Don't cry, baby."
"Please."
"Somebody, please, help my baby!"
"Help!"
No matter how much I screamed and begged, nobody could hear me.
My baby was left to freeze to death in that fridge.
Afterward, Evelyn sobbed, insisting she didn't mean to do it, and promised she'd give Henry another child to make up for it.
Henry comforted her for ages before finally grinning and saying, "This time, I want a chubby, healthy boy."
Just as my heart was shattering, a powerful force suddenly yanked me into a blinding swirl of light.
When I opened my eyes again, I was back on the day I went for my pregnancy checkup.
Evelyn opened the car door, head down and looking totally meek.
"M-Ma'am, please get in the car," she stammered.
Everything I'd been through in my previous life hit me all at once.
I tried to steady my shaking hands and snapped at Evelyn, unable to hide my fury.
I said, "You can't even manage basic chores, and now you think you can drive me anywhere?
"Are you trying to get me killed?"
"Grace, I'm so sorry," Evelyn whimpered, her voice trembling.
She suddenly flinched and bowed, looking totally lost. "I don't know what I did to make you hate me so much, but..."
Henry was about to head out when he saw the whole thing.
Henry's eyes twitched in annoyance.
With obvious concern, he walked over and helped Evelyn up.
"Evelyn was just trying to help. She's always been timid. Why are you giving her such a hard time?" Henry said.
"Shut up." I shot Henry a glare.
"I'm disciplining a servant. Since when do you get to stick your nose in?" I snapped.
Henry froze, stunned. It was the first time I'd ever lost my temper with him since we got married.
For a moment, his brows knitted and his hand shot up, ready to strike.
"Grace! You..." he blurted out.
I didn't flinch. I stepped right up to him with a mocking smirk on my lips. "What, you want to hit me over a servant?"
"Go on, hit me." I glared at him, my voice sharp with anger. "Don't forget that the Quinn family still needs our family to bail you out.
"Hit me, and you'll just be killing off the Quinn family for good."
"You!" Henry clenched his jaw, but finally lowered his hand, his anger barely contained.
"Why do you always have to push things so far?" Henry said.
Just as he finished speaking, Evelyn, still sniffling, reached out and tugged at Henry's sleeve.
She wiped her tears and shook her head. "Mr. Quinn, it's all my fault. I'm the one who upsets Grace.
"Please, don't argue over me. I don't want this to come between you two.
"After all..."
I'd seen enough of her fake tears. Before she could finish, I gave her a sarcastic smirk and raised an eyebrow. "You?
"Who the hell do you think you are?"
Henry was so pissed that he just pointed at me, totally speechless.
Didn't bother to look at him for long. "Same to you."
With that, I hauled my mom off to the hospital.
Fortunately, in this life, my baby was safe and sound.
At the same time, I was already ready to kick the dad to the curb and raise my kid on my own.
Now that I got a second shot at life, if I didn't drag those two through hell, how could I ever make up for all the pain I went through before?
