Chapter 1
Evelyn Heart, the nanny my husband hired, was always putting on her whole "scared and fragile" persona.
While driving me to my prenatal checkup, she freaked out at a tiny dog on the sidewalk, let go of the wheel, covered her eyes, and shrieked.
Just as the car was about to crash into a fully loaded truck, she suddenly jerked the wheel.
She actually used me, sitting in the passenger seat, as a human shield when the steel bars came flying at us.
My mom, who was sitting in the back, and I got skewered by the flying steel bars, while Evelyn, behind the wheel, somehow came out completely unscathed.
As I was dying, barely hanging on, Evelyn was calling my husband, her voice trembling with sobs.
"Mr. Quinn, I... I think I caused trouble again," Evelyn whimpered.
On the other end, my husband was sweating bullets.
"Honey, please don't cry. I've got 15 million in the company account. Even if you get someone killed, I'll take care of it for you," he said.
In the end, my mom died on the spot from her injuries, and I passed away on the way to the hospital.
Afterward, as the bereaved family member, my husband, Henry Quinn, personally signed a letter of forgiveness for Evelyn.
He shamelessly got laid with her right in front of my memorial photo.
He even took the company I built from scratch and used it as a wedding gift to flaunt his grand remarriage.
When I opened my eyes again, Evelyn was nervously pulling open the car door, looking all meek and submissive. She said she was taking me to my prenatal checkup.

"There's a dog!" Evelyn shrieked.
Evelyn's scream echoed through the car, her panic obvious.
She let go of the wheel, slapped her hands over her eyes, and slammed her foot down on the gas.
In my previous life, I was totally stunned.
What kind of absolute lunatic let go of the wheel and covered her eyes while driving?
But before I could even rip into her, the car was already barreling straight toward a fully loaded truck.
Suddenly, with a sharp screech of tires, a bunch of steel bars came flying right at us.
In a panic, Evelyn suddenly came to her senses. She yanked the wheel, practically shoving me in the passenger seat right into the path of the flying steel bars.
I was frozen, unable to react.
All I could do was watch as the window shattered, and a heavy steel bar rammed straight through my throat.
I was nailed to the passenger seat, completely helpless.
I tried to call for help, but nothing came out.
All I could do was shoot Evelyn a desperate look.
But she was totally fine. She stumbled out of the car, locked the door behind her, plopped down on the pavement, and started crying as she dialed up my husband.
"Mr. Quinn, I... I think I caused trouble again," Evelyn whimpered.
Evelyn had her phone on speaker, whether she meant to or not.
On the other end, my husband was sweating bullets while hearing her soft, tearful voice.
"Honey, please don't cry. I've got 15 million in the company account. Even if you get someone killed, I'll take care of it for you," he said.
Evelyn instinctively glanced at me, still sniffling quietly.
"Really? Then swear it," she whimpered.
I was in so much pain that I couldn't even bother with their shameless flirting.
All I could think about was my mom in the back seat. Helpless and wracked with pain, I just kept slamming my hand against the window.
Finally, some random passerby called for help, and the rescue team showed up.
The whole time, my husband was fussing over Evelyn, trying to calm her down.
Even though he knew Evelyn was driving me to my prenatal checkup, he never said a word about me or my mom. Not once.
"Whose car is this?" the rescue team leader barked.
He'd already tried several times to yank the door open, but it wouldn't budge. Now he shot a furious look at the crowd, clearly pissed off.
"Seriously, locking the doors at a time like this? Are you trying to get the people inside killed?" he yelled.
As soon as he said that, Evelyn suddenly snapped out of it, like she'd just woken up from a dream. She stood up, still sobbing, and stumbled over.
"Why are you yelling at me? I don't know anything about this stuff," Evelyn whimpered.
She nervously rummaged around, hands shaking as she tried to find the car keys.
"Uh... the unlock button... Which one is it again?" she stammered, sounding totally lost.
She gave the rescue team a puppy-eyed look, on the verge of tears.
In just a few minutes, she kept dropping the car keys over and over, at least a dozen times.
Finally, Evelyn just plopped down on the ground and burst into tears. "You're all picking on me! I'm super timid, okay? Now I'm so freaked out that I can't even think straight."
Seeing this, the rescue team leader could only grit his teeth in exasperation and told his crew to just break into the car already.
After what felt like ages, the rescue team finally managed to tear the door off.
Suddenly, a pair of resolute eyes broke into my line of sight, full of unwavering determination.
He said, "Hey, stay with me.
"I'm getting you out of here. Trust me."
When he saw just how badly I was hurt, his eyes welled up with tears.
As I was fading in and out, I wanted to ask how my mom was doing.
But then I saw him, all anxious, telling his team, "Get the woman in the front out first.
"The old lady in the back... The same steel bar went straight through her heart.
"She's already gone."
In that instant, the pain I'd been numb to hit me like a truck. All of a sudden, it was sharp and real again.
I was sweating buckets, crying my eyes out. The pain was just too much to handle.
They couldn't just yank the steel bar out of me, so they had to fire up an electric saw and cut through it while it was still inside me.
With sparks flying everywhere, every second felt like I was staring death right in the face.
Too bad.
In the end, I lost my life on the way to the hospital. We missed the critical window, and there was no saving me.
Right before I blacked out for good, I grabbed the nurse's wrist.
With shaking hands, I wrote in her palm, "Save my baby, please."
