Chapter 8

LAYLA’S POV

Of course, I know what my declaration meant, and those words that I uttered were spread across the coven. They seemed to not believe how pompous I was to think that I was going to be stronger and fit enough and also prove myself worthy.

Every block I walked through, I had eyes on me, brutally reminding me of the decision I had just made and of the brutality the wolves had done to them.

Rebuilding the Coven in a more private place was also a lot of work, which they should be occupied with and not focusing on me but I guess I have more influence than I thought.

“Hey, Wolf girl!” I heard Beca yell from across.

I clenched my fist, recalling that I had almost died because of her. I looked away and continued on my way to Sally’s house.

“Woah looks like someone has grown wings,” Ariel teased

“Yeah, did you hear, she said she was never going to give up, I guess that declaration got in her head” Beca grunted.

I ignored them as always and as I predicted, they blocked my path “Where do you think you’re going” Beca pushed me with the tip of her finger.

I shut my eyes and she pushed me again

“I heard you reported me to Mystic” she blurted “How dare you? You have some nerves going to the report me?” she grunted

“I almost died because of you, I had to do something!” I sneered

She pushed me again “But you didn't die, guess who did Raven, she died and it was because of you!” she snarled

I glared at her

“Why? Am I lying?” she rasped

I bit my lower lips “The blood of every witch that was killed is in your hands including Raven, and you know why? Because if you had accepted to be the priestess, if you had not turned your back on us, the oracle would have spoken to you and you would have seen the attack coming and prevented it from happening, or better still, you protect us. So for as long as you wake up every morning have it at the back of your mind that you killed every single one of us!” she grunted as tears flowed down her cheek as she wiped it off.

“Beca that’s enough!” Sally said from behind, she walked closer and pulled Beca away.

“Leave Layla alone, none of this is her fault and besides she is making it up to us the best way she can, stop bullying her, Raven will not want this” Sally muffled

“You don't know what Sally wants! Keep her name out of your mouth! And in case you do not remember, Sally is dead and what she wants does not matter anymore” Beca exploded.

“I suggest you keep your distance, If she becomes high priestess, the oracle could punish you guys for making things hard for her” Sally blurted

Beca took a step back, my brows were arched, I never knew I held such power but more so I was grateful I had someone to defend me.

“That is if she becomes the high priestess” she snorted and walked away.

I crumbled to the ground and tears rolled down my cheek. Beca’s words were like the edges of a sharpened sword, they drove into my heart causing severe damage.

Sally leaned over and pulled me into her arms, she patted me gently and I cried.

After I got sober, she took me to her house and made me some rice porridge with a cup of warm tea. I ate to the brim and relaxed for a bit.

I clenched my fist as I stared out the window

“Is something bothering you?” Sally asked

I exhaled without saying a word, I was tired of feeling weak and hopeless, I wanted to defend myself and prove myself, show them all that we were on the same side but for some reason, I felt like I needed to break Beca and her crew before I can cross that bridge.

“Teach me” I muttered turning to Sally

“Teach you what?” her brows arched, gazing at me.

“Spells, magic and how to fight and defend myself” I blurted

Sally’s eyes lit up, and suddenly a grin appeared on her face “I thought you’d never ask” she giggled

It was not as easy as I thought, spells were hard, really hard but I was willing to give it my all.

We spent the most time in a little room, the room was filled with books, not just books but spells books, rules about Magic, and how to go about them. Love potions, fire potions, poison spells that could make people die in seconds or hours but then return them to life, there were so many things I read but I could not understand.

We started with the basics, she corrected the soul summon I practiced on myself, helped me understand where I went wrong and taught me the correct intonations needed for the right spells.

“This was harder than I thought” I muffled

“I know, you spent your whole life learning the way of the wolves, how to unleash your wolf at the coming of age, how to be a good Luna, how to heal yourself with the help of your wolf, and how to control yourselves on the full moon but this is different, it’s cunning and diabolical, I guess that’s why your kind had always been so scared of us but this is what we do, we train everyone, everyone that is born into the witch clan, from infant they learn our ways, they learn the spells, they learn the rules and that’s how peace had remained” Sally explained

I gazed at her and nodded in agreement.

She was right, the wolves had always been scared of witches because of their ability to do things that wolves could not do.

Imagine being able to produce fire with your palm with just three words, I see where the fear is but it doesn’t justify the killing, it doesn’t justify the hate, it doesn’t justify the destruction.

The door yanked open and one of the witches walked in “Mystic wants to see you” She blurted

I arched my brows and walked out of the room with Sally right next to me.

We arrived at her chamber and yanked the door open

“You sent for me” I muttered

“Yes, you are to have a duel with Beca in three days’ time, get ready” she blurted nonchalantly

“What?” I exclaimed
