Chapter 2
Dawn crept through our bedroom windows like an unwelcome witness, illuminating the shattered remnants of my moonstone pendant scattered across the floor. I hadn't slept. How could I, when every breath in this room carried the mingled scents of betrayal?
I dressed carefully in my ceremonial Luna gown—the deep blue silk that Benjamin had once said matched my eyes. Today, it would serve a different purpose entirely.
The pack house buzzed with anniversary preparations below, voices carrying up through the floorboards as pack members decorated for what they believed would be a celebration. If only they knew.
Benjamin's footsteps echoed in the hallway, and I steeled myself as he entered our chambers. He moved with his usual Alpha confidence, adjusting his ceremonial shirt, completely oblivious to the storm brewing within me.
"Good morning, beautiful." His voice held that practiced warmth he'd perfected over the years. "Ready for our big day?"
I turned to face him, and something in my expression must have registered because his smile faltered slightly.
"I heard you last night," I said, my voice steady despite Luna's agitation clawing at my chest. "Every word."
Benjamin's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly—that tell I'd learned to recognize too late. "Olivia, whatever you think you heard—"
"Stepping stone." The words fell between us like a blade. "That's what you called me. Eight years of my life, and I was nothing more than a stepping stone."
His Alpha mask slipped entirely, revealing something cold and calculating underneath. "You were eavesdropping on private pack business."
"Pack business?" Luna snarled within me, lending strength to my voice. "Our mate bond is pack business now?"
Benjamin straightened, his Alpha aura pressing against me in a way that once would have made me submit. Not anymore. "Don't be dramatic, Olivia. You've served your purpose well. Your family's territory gave us legitimacy, but we need stronger alliances now. The Silver Creek Pack offers resources you simply can't match."
The casual dismissal hit harder than any physical blow. "Skye Murphy."
"She understands strategy. Politics." He shrugged as if discussing weather patterns. "The Moon Goddess may have paired us initially, but even divine connections can evolve."
"Evolve?" My voice cracked. "You mean replaced."
"If you want to put it that way." His indifference was breathtaking in its cruelty. "This doesn't have to be unpleasant, Olivia. You can remain in the pack, find a suitable Beta to mate with. Your contributions won't be forgotten."
Luna's rage erupted within me, and I felt my eyes flash with her fury. "You think I'll just... step aside? Accept being discarded for your political games?"
"I think you'll be reasonable." His Alpha tone carried warning now. "You've always been reasonable, Olivia. It's one of your better qualities."
Reasonable. Compliant. Useful. The words he'd never said aloud but had always implied crashed over me. Eight years of being the perfect Luna, and this was my reward.
"You're right," I said quietly, and relief flickered across his features. "I have been reasonable. But not anymore."
I turned and walked toward the door, my silk gown rustling with each determined step.
"Where are you going?" Benjamin called after me, the first note of uncertainty creeping into his voice.
"To be unreasonable."
The pack had already gathered in the ceremonial hall, their faces bright with anticipation for what they believed would be a celebration of enduring love. Marcus stood near the elder's circle, his expression troubled as our eyes met. He'd known. They all would, soon enough.
I walked to the center of the sacred circle, my bare feet silent against the ancient stone. The pack elders looked up expectantly, smiles fading as they registered my expression.
"I, Olivia Knight, Luna of the Moonstone Pack," my voice carried clearly through the suddenly silent hall, "reject you, Benjamin Torres, Alpha of the Moonstone Pack, as my mate and as my Alpha."
The words hit the gathered pack like a physical blow. Gasps echoed through the hall, followed by shocked murmurs. Benjamin appeared in the doorway, his face a mask of disbelief and growing fury.
"Olivia, stop this nonsense—" he began, but I continued the ancient ritual.
"I sever our mate bond, I renounce our connection, and I reclaim my autonomy under the Moon Goddess's witness."
Pain exploded through my chest as the golden thread that had bound us for eight years began to fray. Luna howled within me, the sound echoing from my throat as the mate bond fought against its dissolution. Every fiber of my being screamed in protest, but I held firm.
Benjamin staggered as if struck, his Alpha aura flickering. The power he'd drawn from our bond—power I'd never realized I was sharing—began to ebb away.
"I claim only what was mine before our union," I continued through gritted teeth, tears streaming down my face. "The northern territories that belonged to my family, given freely but now reclaimed by right of rejection."
The final words of the ritual left my lips like a death knell, and the mate bond snapped completely. I collapsed to my knees as Benjamin's roar of denial shook the ceremonial hall.
The pack stared in stunned silence as their Alpha—suddenly diminished, suddenly desperate—realized exactly what he'd lost.
