Chapter 1
The moonstone felt cool against my fingertips as I traced the intricate wolf silhouette I'd spent weeks carving into its surface. Tomorrow marked our second Luna ceremony anniversary, and this pendant—crafted from a stone I'd found during our very first pack run together—would be Benjamin's surprise gift.
I held it up to the lamplight in our private chambers, watching the pale blue stone catch the glow. Eight years. Eight years since I'd first felt the mate bond snap into place, since I'd willingly handed over my family's territorial inheritance to help Benjamin claim his Alpha status. Eight years of building the Moonstone Pack from nothing, side by side.
The silver chain pooled in my palm as I carefully placed the pendant back in its velvet box. Benjamin would love it—I was certain. He'd always said the moonstone reminded him of my eyes when my wolf, Luna, surfaced during our runs.
A smile tugged at my lips as I imagined his reaction. Maybe we could take a midnight run after the ceremony tomorrow, just the two of us, like we used to before pack duties consumed so much of our time. The thought sent warmth spreading through my chest, and I could feel Luna stirring contentedly within me, sharing my anticipation.
I glanced at the clock—nearly midnight. Benjamin should have returned from his evening patrol by now. The anniversary celebration would begin early tomorrow, and I wanted to give him the pendant tonight, in private, away from the pack's watchful eyes.
Rising from my chair, I smoothed down my silk nightgown and padded barefoot across the hardwood floor. The pack house felt unusually quiet, most members already asleep in preparation for tomorrow's festivities. My bare feet made no sound as I moved through the familiar corridors, following Benjamin's scent trail toward his private study.
But as I approached the heavy oak door, voices drifted through the wood—Benjamin's deep Alpha tone and Marcus Rodriguez's more measured Beta cadence. I paused, my hand hovering over the doorknob. They were discussing pack business this late?
"...eight years of playing the devoted mate," Benjamin's voice carried clearly through the door, and something cold settled in my stomach. "But let's be honest, Marcus. Olivia was always more stepping stone than true partner."
The pendant box slipped from my suddenly nerveless fingers, hitting the floor with a soft thud that seemed deafening in the quiet hallway.
"Alpha, perhaps we shouldn't—" Marcus began, but Benjamin cut him off with a harsh laugh.
"Her family's territory was exactly what I needed to establish legitimacy. The mate bond was just... convenient timing. Lucky for me the Moon Goddess provided such a useful arrangement."
My legs threatened to give out. Stepping stone. The words echoed in my mind as Luna whimpered deep within me, our shared pain making my chest tight. Eight years of devotion, of sacrifice, of believing in our destined connection—reduced to political convenience.
"The Silver Creek Pack alliance will provide much more strategic value," Benjamin continued, his tone casual, as if discussing livestock rather than our sacred mate bond. "Skye Murphy understands the game better than Olivia ever did. Sometimes I wonder if the Moon Goddess made a mistake with the original pairing."
I pressed my back against the wall, struggling to breathe. Skye Murphy—the beautiful, ambitious she-wolf from the neighboring pack who'd been visiting frequently for "alliance negotiations." The way she looked at Benjamin during pack meetings, the subtle touches, the lingering scents I'd tried to dismiss as paranoia.
Luna snarled within me, her anguish mixing with mine until I couldn't tell where her pain ended and mine began. The mate bond, that golden thread I'd treasured for eight years, felt suddenly fragile, stretched thin by betrayal.
I bent to retrieve the pendant box with shaking hands, my vision blurring. Tomorrow's celebration—our celebration—felt like a mockery now. How long had he felt this way? How long had I been living a lie while he planned my replacement?
The voices continued inside the study, but I couldn't bear to hear more. I needed proof. I needed to know how deep this betrayal ran.
Turning away from the door, I followed my nose instead of my heart, tracking the scent trails throughout the pack house with newfound purpose. Benjamin's familiar cedar and pine scent wound through the corridors, but it wasn't alone.
Skye's jasmine and vanilla fragrance intertwined with his, growing stronger as I climbed the stairs toward our private wing. Our bedroom. Our sanctuary.
The pendant box trembled in my grip as I pushed open the door to find our bed sheets carrying both their scents, intimate and undeniable. They'd been here. In our bed. In our home.
A sound escaped my throat—part sob, part growl—as Luna's rage finally overwhelmed my shock. The pendant box flew from my hands, striking the wall with enough force to crack the velvet and send the moonstone skittering across the floor.
Eight years of my life. Eight years of believing in forever.
All for nothing.
