Chapter 2
2.2|| The Swap
"Celeste," Kaelen begins, his voice dropping as his Alpha aura begins to bleed into the air.
It’s not a gentle warmth, it’s a suffocatingly, heavy pressure designed specifically to keep me quiet, to bend my head and force my compliance.
I hate it.
The weight of his command presses down on my shoulders like lead, demanding that I bow my head, that I silence the defiant roar of my wolf, Lyra.
"We need to discuss the Academy admission," Kaelen says.
I look at him, the cold breeze of the training grounds whipping strands of dark hair across my face.
Is he asking me? Or is this an order from a ruler to his subject? The line between mate and Alpha has never felt so dangerously blurred.
"I got it," I say, my voice steady despite the tremor in my fingers. I pull the heavy parchment from my tunic, holding it out so the silver wax seal catches the dim morning light. "The letter arrived this morning. The official registration is complete, so I’ll leave for the Capital in three days."
"You aren't going," Kaelen says flatly.
The words hang in the damp morning air, cold and sharp, striking me like a physical blow to the chest. I actually blink, staring at him, utterly convinced that I have somehow misheard him. The wind rustles the pine trees, but my world has gone entirely still.
"What do you mean?" I ask, a breathless, hollow laugh escaping my throat. "Kaelen, I won the trials. I fought through five rounds of brutal combat. I ranked first in the entire northern sector, remember? You watched me cross the finish line. You saw me bleed for this."
"Elara needs it more," Kaelen says. His voice is flat, devoid of any warmth, any pride, any of the affection he whispered into my hair just last night. "Her core is weak, Celeste. You know this. Without the specialized ambient mana of the Royal Academy’s sacred training grounds, her wolf will never fully mature. She will remain vulnerable forever. As your Alpha and your mate, I have reallocated the Silver Crest sponsorship to her."
I freeze. The word reallocated rings in my ears, sterile and clinical, as if he is speaking about grain storage rather than the dream I have sacrificed my youth to achieve.
Slowly, my gaze shifts from Kaelen to the girl clinging to his arm.
Elara.
For a fraction of a second, the mask slips. A small, triumphant smirk plays on her lips, her eyes glittering with a venomous satisfaction.
But the moment she realizes I am looking, she quickly buries her face back into the dark fabric of Kaelen’s shoulder, letting out a soft, trembling sob that sounds entirely manufactured.
"You gave my spot... to her?"
My voice is dangerously quiet, a low whisper that barely carries over the wind, yet it vibrates with a sudden, volatile heat.
"She didn't even enter the trials, Kaelen! She didn't spend the last five years waking up at dawn to run the mountain passes until her lungs bled. She didn't break her collarbone in the semi-finals and pop it back into place just to keep fighting! She spent the trial week getting her hair braided in the capital!"
"Celeste, understand my position," Kaelen commands, his tone hardening as he steps forward, his shadow engulfing me entirely. The pressure of his Alpha aura spikes, warning me that I am crossing a line.
"As the Alpha, I must protect the weak. I must think of the collective survival of this pack. You are strong and resilient. You can survive and thrive without the Academy, but Elara cannot. This is her only chance to be whole."
"The rules of the Kingdom are clear!" I argue, my heart hammering violently against my ribs, wild and frantic. "The spot belongs to the winner of the trials. The Royal Law dictates it. You cannot simply swap names on a royal document because of personal favoritism!"
"I am the Alpha of the Silver Crest Pack!" Kaelen barks.
His voice booms across the clearing, laced with pure, raw dominant power. The sheer force of his voice ripples through the air, a physical shockwave that causes the younger warriors practicing at the edge of the training grounds to instantly drop to their knees, their heads bowed in involuntary submission.
I feel the crushing weight of his command slam into me. My legs shake violently, the muscles in my thighs screaming as they fight against the biological urge to submit to my Alpha.
But I grip the parchment in my hand, grit my teeth, and force myself to stand tall. I refuse to bow to him. Not for this.
"The Royal Council allows the local Alpha the final veto on all sponsorships," Kaelen says, his voice dropping back to a cold, administrative tone. "I have already signed the transfer papers. The registry in the capital has been updated and Elara’s name is on the roster."
The realization cuts deeper than any silver blade ever could. It slices through the bond, through my heart, through the five years of devotion I gave to this man.
"You did this behind my back," I whisper. The words feel like ash on my tongue. "While I was out patrolling the freezing border in the dead of winter, while I was bleeding on the stones to keep this pack safe, you were sitting in your warm study, planning how to steal the one thing I worked my entire life to achieve."
"It is not theft, Celeste. It is resource allocation," Kaelen says, waving his hand dismissively, as if he is merely balancing a ledger. "Elara is family. She is your stepsister. You are the future Luna of this pack, so you should be happy to support her development. You should be willing to make sacrifices for the greater good of our people."
"Sacrifices?" I ask, my voice trembling with a mixture of grief and mounting fury. "You didn't ask me to make a sacrifice, Kaelen. You took it. You stole my victory and handed it to a parasite."
Elara steps out from behind Kaelen’s broad back, her eyes shining with unshed, crocodile tears as she reaches a hand out toward me.
"Celeste, please don't be mad at Kaelen," she whimpers, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "He only did this because he cares about my health. I know how much you wanted to go, and I feel so guilty... I promise I will write to you every single week from the Capital. I will share all of my lecture notes with you! We can still learn together!"
"Keep your notes, Elara," I spit, the betrayal burning like acid in my throat. I step back, avoiding her touch as if her very skin is poisonous. "And keep your filthy hands off my mate."
But as I look at Kaelen, the desperate anger inside me suddenly begins to wither, replaced by a cold, hollow truth.
He isn't being forced into this by the council. He isn't acting out of a noble duty to the pack. He chose this. He looked at my strength, at my scars, at the blood I spilled to make him proud, and he decided it was worth nothing.
He chose her weakness over my strength.
He chose to break me, to strip away my dreams and my future, just so he could feel like a savior to someone who will always look up at him with helpless, adoring eyes.
"Is this truly what you want, Kaelen?" I ask.
I step closer, staring directly into his dark eyes, ignoring the heavy pressure of his aura. I look past the title of Alpha, looking deep for the man who held me under the sacred light of the full moon and swore to cherish me, to elevate me, to stand by my side as an equal.
"Are you truly willing to do this to me?"
Kaelen’s jaw tightens. For a fraction of a second, his gaze flickers, a shadow of the boy I loved passing through his eyes.
But then, the cold, unyielding mask of the leader locks back into place. He looks away from me, staring out over the empty training grounds.
"It is already done, Celeste," Kaelen says, his voice flat and final. "Accept it."
