Chapter 1
1.1|| The Golden Letter
My fingers tremble against the heavy, gold-trimmed parchment. The wax seal of the Lycan Royal Academy—a roaring wolf crowned in silver—is cold against my palm, its sharp edges biting into my calloused skin.
I trace the written letters of my name, feeling the ink of Celeste Hart.
"I did it," I whisper to the empty training grounds, my voice barely louder than the rustle of the wind.
For five years, while the rest of the pack slept beneath warm furs, I ran until my lungs burned like fire, and I fought until my knuckles bled and bruised.
The Academy only accepts one external wolf from the outer territories every four years. The odds were stacked entirely against me, yet, I won the trials. I outlasted them all.
I secured my spot.
I, Celeste Hart, did that. No one handed it to me.
"Celeste!"
The sharp, sweet voice breaks my reverie. I turn, instinctively tucking the precious letter safely into the inner pocket of my leather tunic, guarding it like a treasure.
My stepsister, Elara, stands at the edge of the clearing. Her delicate, pale pink silk dress is entirely out of place against the mud of the training grounds, the hem already ruined and stained by the wet earth.
Behind her walks Kaelen, our Alpha. My mate.
The moment my eyes lock onto him, Kaelen’s dark eyes meet mine. A familiar, warm spark dances along my collarbone, the mate bond singing its beautiful, golden song.
But his expression isn't joyful. It’s heavy, weighed down by a dark, suffocating silence that makes my chest suddenly tighten.
Something’s off with him. The usual pride that fills his gaze when he looks at me is entirely absent.
"Is something wrong?" I ask, stepping forward, my hand resting protectively over the spot where the letter lies against my chest.
Elara won't look me in the eye. Instead, she clutches Kaelen’s arm, her pale, manicured fingers sinking deep into his dark sleeve. My wolf, Lyra, growls low and dangerous in my mind, baring her teeth. Too close. She is too close to our mate.
I take a deep breath of the musty morning air to steady my racing heart. This letter was supposed to be our future. I thought Kaelen would be proud of me.
I thought he would celebrate the fact that his mate, the future Luna of the Silver Crest Pack, had achieved the impossible.
Isn’t that what anyone else would do?
The Royal Academy of the Lycan Kingdom is not just a school—it is the ultimate breeding ground for the strongest warriors and leaders in the realm.
Securing admission means securing a legacy, and I just secured our legacy.
"Celeste," Kaelen speaks, his voice unusually formal, stripping away the warmth we shared just last night. He steps ahead of Elara, but his hand remains lingering near hers, a protective gesture that sends a cold, sharp spike of anxiety straight through my chest.
"We’ve been looking for you," Kaelen continues, his posture rigid. "The council just received the official dispatch from the Capital."
"I have it right here," I say, holding up the golden envelope, trying to force a reassuring smile onto my face. "I was just about to come to your office to show you. The trials were brutal, Kaelen, but our efforts paid off. I ranked first in the entire northern sector."
Elara lets out a soft, theatrical sigh, burying her face slightly against Kaelen’s broad shoulder. Her shoulders tremble as if she is on the verge of tears. "It must be so nice to be so strong, Celeste. Some of us aren't blessed with such natural resilience. Some of us have to struggle just to keep our wolves from fading into nothing."
"What does that have to do with my admission, Elara?" I ask, my tone sharpening like a blade.
My instincts are screaming at me now. The bond between Kaelen and me is humming, but instead of the usual comforting warmth, it carries a heavy, toxic wave of guilt and hesitation from his side. He won't meet my gaze fully.
I don’t like this.
Kaelen looks down at Elara, his eyes softening in a way they rarely do when he looks at me. With me, he expects strength, perfection, endurance. With her, he acts like she is a fragile glass doll destined to shatter. When he raises his head to address me again, his features have hardened into the unyielding mask of the Alpha.
The warm, loving mate I knew this morning is gone, replaced by a leader making a calculated, cold decision.
"Celeste, we need to talk inside," he says, his Alpha aura flaring slightly—a subtle, heavy command designed to make me submit and fall in line.
"No," I say, planting my boots firmly in the damp, muddy earth, refusing to let his aura bend my head. "We can talk right here, under the open sky. What is going on, Kaelen? Speak to me."
He closes the distance between us, his massive shadow falling over me, blocking out the dim morning sun.
He looks down at the golden letter in my hand. For a fleeting second, I see a flash of genuine regret in his eyes, but he suppresses it quickly, his jaw tightening into a hard line.
"The pack's future must always come before personal ambitions," Kaelen says, his voice cold and flat. "Even yours."
A sickening dread pools in my stomach, turning to ice. The wind rustles the towering pine trees around the pavilion, carrying the scent of rain, wet mud, and the cloying, sweet perfume Elara always wears to mask her weak wolf.
It feels like a trap.
"What are you saying?" I whisper, the paper of the envelope crinkling as my grip tightens.
"Elara's wolf is failing, Celeste," Kaelen says, his voice steady but hollow. "The Royal Academy has a specialized high-tier healing and core-strengthening program. It is the only place in the kingdom that can save her from becoming a feral or losing her wolf entirely."
He takes a deep breath, and the words that follow slice through me like a silver blade.
"We are transferring your admission ticket to her. The council has already signed the petition, and as your Alpha, I have approved it. You will hand over the letter."
The world goes entirely silent. The wind stops. My heart stops.
I squeeze the letter tighter, the parchment crinkling under my grip as the words shatter my world into a million painful pieces.
