Chapter 2
My parents had passed away for many years. In the Bernan family, there were only two children—my brother Kevin and me. Ashley could never be a member of the Bernan family. But I had no time to ask for details right then.
The two gangsters dragged Oliver and me to the river together. This part of the river was very deep. If we fell in, we would definitely not survive.
I worried about why Kevin hadn't come yet. At the same time, I looked around, trying to find a chance to escape.
Ashley saw through my thoughts. She sneered and said, "You still want to run at a time like this. You're really disobedient. Before throwing her in, break her legs first."
A gangster picked up an iron rod and walked toward me. Even though Oliver was beaten until his head was covered in blood, he still tried his best to knock one gangster away.
Then he shouted to me, "Luna, I'll hold them off. Run, now!"
"I'll beat your ass out today, big hero." The gangster was completely enraged. He held the iron rod high and aimed it at Oliver's head.
Just then, a car stopped suddenly in front of us. A man got out of it and shouted at the gangsters, "Stop if you don't want to die here right now."
When I saw the familiar face of Gary Hudson who got out of the car, the worry hanging over my heart finally lifted. The Bernan family's people had arrived.
The gangsters were controlled right away. Ashley screamed, "Who are you? What do you want to do to me? I'm the daughter of the Bernan family." As soon as she finished speaking, she was knocked unconscious by the men Gary brought.
Gary told his men to take the people who had bullied me to the warehouse first. How to deal with them later would all depend on my decision.
Oliver and I were sent to the hospital. After an examination, the doctor said I only had minor injuries and was not seriously hurt.
But Oliver's condition was much worse. He had suffered a severe blow to the head and needed to be hospitalized for treatment.
It was not until he came out of the emergency room and was pushed into the ward that the worry in my heart eased a little.
I borrowed a nurse's phone to report my safety to Kevin. When Kevin heard that I had not only been falsely accused of not being a member of the Bernan family but also almost killed, he was furious.
He said, "If I wasn't stuck in an important meeting right now, I would definitely have gone with Gary and helped you get even in person."
I hurried to comfort him, "Brother, tell Gary to go back. You need help. I just need to keep a few bodyguards here. Also, Kevin, I don't want to marry Nick anymore. I like Oliver."
Kevin was shocked at first, then smiled and said, "I'm glad to hear that. I've long thought Nick was unreliable."
He continued, "Since you don't like him now, I'll take back all the support our family has given to him, so he'll know the consequences of offending my sister."
After nailing those things down with Kevin, we hung up the phone.
Whether in my previous life or this life, Nick had disappointed me thoroughly. His eyes were only on his childhood sweetheart Ashley. He ignored our years of feelings and even humiliated me wantonly. This time, I would definitely not let Nick off easily.
But I didn't expect that before I could take revenge on him, he came to me on his own initiative. Nick's face was twisted with anger, and then he slapped me hard.
"Luna, you're nuts. You've taken over Ashley's life for more than twenty years, and now you even got someone to bully her," Nick said.
He continued, "When Mr. Bernan finds out the truth, he will never forgive you. Don't drag me into the trouble you got out of stupidity," Nick said.
After he slapped me, I tasted the smell of blood in my mouth instantly.
So I slapped him back and then sneered, "She said she's the daughter of the Bernan family, and you just believed her? You two grew up together. Do you think she looks even a little like Kevin?"
Nick frowned and said impatiently, "Stop making excuses. Ashley has already done a paternity test."
After a pause, he added hypocritically, "I know you can't bear to part with the wealth and status of the Bernan family."
"How about this? As long as you obediently give your identity back to Ashley, I can take care of you. I can't give you the status of my wife, but at least your life can be as good as in the Bernan family," he said.
But what I wanted to know more at that moment was whether Ashley had really done a paternity test with Kevin, and how exactly she had gotten Kevin's DNA sample.
