Chapter 1
I was born with a "pain transfer" ability. If someone faked pain, I'd make them feel it for real.
One time, a scheming girl pretended to fall and accused me of pushing her, saying how much it hurt. The next second, she was shrieking as if every bone in her body had shattered.
Another time, an old lady lay in front of my car, claiming her back was broken. Instantly, her words came true and made her unable to move.
Over time, people came to know my abilities and began to fear me. Whenever I was around, nobody dared to fake being sick or pretend to be wronged.
But everything changed when I got engaged to Ethan Harrison, an aloof, ascetic surgeon who was basically a legend in the operating room.
At the engagement party, his junior schoolmate, Luna Carter, was clutching her stomach, sweating, and crying.
Right in front of all the big shots in the medical world, she tugged on Ethan's sleeve, whining.
She said, "Ethan, my stomach cancer is acting up again. It hurts so much, please help me!"
The atmosphere of the once-elegant banquet hall suddenly grew tense. Ethan slipped off his gloves.
He said, "Chloe, Luna's really ill. Let's postpone the engagement party for now.
"As a doctor, I can't just stand here and watch a patient suffer."
My hand paused, champagne glass still raised.
I said to Luna, "I just scanned your whole body, now your illness is true. Well, go to hell then.
"Your cancer cells just spread everywhere, and the pain's been cranked up tenfold. You'll die from the pain alone."
For the sake of my family's alliance, I got engaged to Ethan, an aloof, ascetic surgeon who was basically a legend in the operating room.
Ethan was the youngest chief surgeon with a bright future in the medical world.
With our two powerful families joining forces, the engagement party was extremely luxurious.
Almost all the big shots showed up.
I was dressed in a couture gown, holding Ethan's arm, standing in the center of the hall.
Everyone praised us as a match made in heaven.
Just as we were about to exchange engagement rings, the door was pushed open by someone.
A thin, delicate girl in a white dress stumbled in.
It was Luna, Ethan's junior from med school.
Luna looked pale as a sheet, clutching her stomach as she rushed over.
With everyone watching, she grabbed Ethan's sleeve.
She cried immediately, with cold sweat on her forehead.
She said, "Ethan, my stomach cancer is acting up again. It hurts so much, please help me!"
The whole room suddenly went silent.
Everyone's eyes were focused on the three of us.
I looked at Luna, putting on her helpless act, and rolled my eyes.
Seriously? Stomach cancer?
Just yesterday, I saw her posting pics of herself eating spicy hot pot.
And now she's suddenly having stomach cancer?
Ethan's usual cold expression suddenly changed.
He didn't hesitate to shake off my hand and grab Luna, holding her to stand.
He said, "Luna, what's wrong? Why didn't you tell me earlier?"
Luna let herself fall into Ethan's arms, breathing weakly.
Luna said, "Ethan, I know today's your engagement day. I didn't want to disturb you.
"But the pain is unbearable. I feel like I'm about to die.
"I just want to see you one last time before I pass away."
Her performance was so dramatic and touching.
Some clueless guests were actually crying.
Ethan's eyes grew misty.
He took off the ring and casually dropped it onto the table.
He said, "Chloe, Luna's really ill. Let's postpone the engagement party for now.
"As a doctor, I can't just stand here and watch a patient suffer."
He didn't even bother to apologize to me. Without a second glance, he held Luna up in his arms and was ready to walk out.
My hand paused in the air, champagne glass still raised.
I watched Luna in Ethan's arms, her lips curling into a taunting smile.
Alright, you're good at faking it, right?
I swirled the champagne in my glass, taking my time before speaking.
I said to Luna, "I just scanned your whole body, now your illness is true. Well, go to hell then.
"Your cancer cells just spread everywhere, and the pain's been cranked up tenfold. You'll die from the pain alone."
Ethan froze, then turned around to glare at me.
He snapped, "Chloe, what nonsense are you talking about?
"Luna's already this sick, and you're still cursing her?
"Why are you so vicious?"
Just as Ethan finished speaking, Luna suddenly let out a blood-curdling scream.
"Oh, my God!"
Her scream was so piercing, it felt like it could rip through the roof.
Luna suddenly broke free from Ethan's arms and slammed hard onto the floor.
She clutched her stomach with both hands, curling up on the ground.
Cold sweat instantly soaked her white dress.
She rolled frantically on the floor, her head smacking against the floor with every turn.
"It hurts! It hurts so much! Help me!" Luna cried out.
