Chapter 2
Chapter Two
The morning training session had become my daily hunting ground. Three days had passed since that first electric moment with Austin, and I'd positioned myself strategically at every combat demonstration since. Today, he stood in the center of the training circle, his movements fluid and deadly as he demonstrated advanced sword techniques to the assembled warriors.
"Watch the footwork," Austin commanded, his voice carrying easily across the grounds. "Balance is everything. Lose your center, lose your life."
I pressed closer to the inner ring of observers, feigning the wide-eyed admiration of an impressed omega while my mind catalogued every detail. The way he favored his left side after a particularly complex maneuver—a tell that suggested an old injury. How his grip shifted slightly when transitioning from offense to defense. Weaknesses I could exploit if my plan required it.
But as Austin moved through the forms, something else captured my attention. The raw power in his movements, the predatory grace that spoke to something deep in my wolf. I found myself genuinely mesmerized by the play of muscles beneath his training leathers, the focused intensity in those amber eyes.
"You," Austin's voice cut through my distraction. "Step forward."
My heart lurched as I realized he was looking directly at me. Around us, pack members shifted with interest, eager to see their future Alpha put an omega in her place.
"Me, Alpha?" I kept my voice small, uncertain.
"Unless you see another wolf foolish enough to stare so openly." His tone was sharp, but something flickered in his eyes—something that looked almost like anticipation. "Since you're so fascinated by weapons training, perhaps you'd like to participate."
I stepped into the circle, acutely aware of every watching gaze. Austin moved to the weapons rack and selected a practice sword, its blade dulled but still capable of serious damage in the wrong hands.
"Basic defensive stance," he ordered, demonstrating the position. "Mirror my movements."
I copied his stance, deliberately making small errors—not enough to seem incompetent, but sufficient to require his correction. As expected, Austin moved closer, his presence overwhelming in the confined space of the training circle.
"Your grip is wrong," he said, reaching for my hands. "Like this."
The moment his fingers closed over mine, the world exploded into sensation. Fire raced up my arms from the point of contact, and that intoxicating scent of cedarwood and storms engulfed me completely. My wolf, usually so carefully controlled, stirred with sudden, desperate longing.
Austin's entire body went rigid. His breathing became shallow, ragged, and when I looked up into his face, his pupils were blown wide with shock. The sword trembled in our joined grip as whatever force was pulling us together intensified.
"What—" I whispered, but Austin jerked his hands away as if I'd burned him.
"Again," he said roughly, his voice strained. "Practice that stance. I'll... observe from here."
But he didn't move away. Instead, he stood frozen, staring at me with an expression of such raw confusion and hunger that my breath caught. Around us, the other pack members continued their training, oblivious to the charged atmosphere crackling between their future Alpha and a lowly omega.
The rest of the session passed in a haze of stolen glances and carefully maintained distance. Every time Austin came near to correct another wolf's form, I felt that same magnetic pull, and every time, he seemed to struggle against it just as desperately as I did.
By the time Maurice dismissed the training session, my hands were shaking and my wolf was clawing at my consciousness, demanding something I couldn't name.
---
That evening, the full moon hung heavy and silver above the mountains, its call thrumming through every werewolf in the territory. Maurice's voice boomed across the gathered pack as we assembled at the edge of the forest.
"Tonight, we run as one!" he declared, already beginning to strip out of his clothes. "Let your wolves taste freedom, but remember—you run under Harvey leadership. Austin will lead, I will follow, and the rest of you will maintain formation."
The familiar ritual of shifting began around me. Bones cracked and reformed, human cries giving way to lupine howls as the pack transformed under the moon's ancient power. I held back, waiting until most had shifted before allowing my own wolf to emerge.
The change swept through me like wildfire, and suddenly I was standing on four legs instead of two. My white coat gleamed silver in the moonlight, and I felt the collective intake of breath from the pack around me. My wolf was rare—a pure white female with ice-blue eyes that seemed to glow in the darkness.
Austin's massive dark grey wolf stood at the head of the pack, but the moment my paws touched the forest floor, his great head swung toward me. Even in wolf form, those amber eyes were unmistakable, and they were fixed on me with an intensity that made my wolf whimper with longing.
Maurice's black wolf snarled a command, and the pack began to move. We flowed through the forest like a living river, following ancient trails that wound through pine and stone. I kept to the middle of the formation as expected, just another wolf in the crowd.
But as we crested a ridge overlooking a moonlit valley, something shifted. Austin's wolf suddenly broke formation, leaving his position at the front to circle back through the running pack. Wolves scattered in confusion as their leader abandoned his post, but Austin paid them no attention.
He was coming for me.
Panic and exhilaration warred in my chest as his powerful form cut through the pack like an arrow finding its target. When he reached me, he didn't slow down. Instead, he fell into step beside me, his massive shoulder brushing against mine as we ran.
The contact sent shockwaves through both our wolves. Without conscious thought, I threw back my head and howled—a sound of pure longing that echoed across the valley. Austin's answering howl harmonized with mine, and suddenly our minds touched.
*Mine,* his wolf's voice whispered through the connection, rough with desperate need. *My mate. My Luna.*
*No,* I tried to protest, but my own wolf was singing with joy, responding to his call with every fiber of her being. *This isn't real. This can't be real.*
*You feel it too,* Austin's mental voice was wonder and anguish combined. *The pull. The need. You're mine, little wolf. You've always been mine.*
Behind us, the pack had come to a complete stop. Wolves milled in confusion, their formation shattered by their Alpha heir's unprecedented behavior. And at the back of the group, Maurice's black wolf stood perfectly still, his intelligent eyes fixed on his son and the white wolf running at his side.
Watching. Calculating. Understanding far more than I wanted him to.
