Chapter 1
Chapter One
The great hall buzzed with anticipation as Alpha Maurice Harvey's commanding voice echoed off the stone walls. "My son returns victorious!" His words carried the weight of absolute authority, silencing every whisper in the packed assembly. I pressed myself deeper into the shadows near the back wall, my fingers unconsciously tracing the faint scar on my wrist—a nervous habit I'd never been able to shake.
The massive oak doors groaned open, and Austin Harvey stepped into the torchlit hall. Even from my hidden position, his presence hit me like a physical force. The future Alpha moved with predatory grace, his broad shoulders filling out his leather jacket, dark hair tousled from the mountain winds. The pack members around me straightened instinctively, their wolves recognizing the power radiating from him in waves.
"Behold your future Alpha!" Maurice's voice boomed as he gestured toward his son. "Austin has successfully eliminated the rogue threat along our eastern borders. Fifteen rogues dead, their leader captured and interrogated." Pride dripped from every word, but I caught something else—a possessive gleam in Maurice's eyes as he watched the pack's reverent reactions to Austin.
My mother stood rigidly beside Maurice's ornate chair, her face a carefully blank mask. The forced mate mark on her neck, usually hidden by her hair, was visible tonight—an ugly, discolored scar that made my stomach churn with remembered rage. She didn't look at Austin, didn't look at anyone. Just stared straight ahead like the broken doll Maurice had made her into.
The perfect son. The golden heir. The weapon I would use to destroy his father.
Austin's amber eyes swept the crowd, acknowledging the bowed heads and whispered congratulations with subtle nods. When his gaze passed over my corner, I felt an inexplicable shiver run down my spine. For a heartbeat, those predatory eyes seemed to linger, but then he was looking away, focusing on his father's continued praise.
"Tomorrow, we feast in honor of Austin's victory," Maurice declared, his Alpha tone brooking no argument. "Every pack member will attend. We celebrate not just this triumph, but the strength of Silverfang Pack under Harvey leadership."
As the assembly began to disperse, I melted further into the shadows, my mind already spinning with possibilities. Austin Harvey—powerful, respected, beloved by his father. If I could turn him against Maurice, if I could make the great Alpha watch his precious heir crumble his legacy from within...
The thought sent dark satisfaction coursing through my veins. Maurice had taken everything from me—my father, my home, my mother's sanity. Now it was time to take something from him.
---
The next evening's feast transformed the great hall into a display of pack wealth and power. Long tables groaned under platters of roasted meat, fresh bread, and barrels of ale. The air thrummed with conversation and laughter, but underneath it all lay the ever-present tension of pack hierarchy—everyone acutely aware of their place in Maurice's rigid order.
I moved between the tables like a ghost, carrying pitchers of wine and keeping my head down. Just another omega servant, invisible and forgotten. Exactly how I preferred it. From this position, I could observe everything—every gesture, every whispered conversation, every subtle power play.
Austin sat at the high table beside his father, still in his black leather jacket but now cleaned and polished. Up close, I could see the sharp angles of his jaw, the way his fingers drummed silently against his thigh—a sign of restless energy barely contained. Several unmated she-wolves had already approached him throughout the evening, offering shy smiles and batting eyelashes. He'd been polite but distant with each one.
Interesting.
"You," Maurice's voice cut through my observations like a blade. "Girl."
Every head at the high table turned toward me. My heart hammered against my ribs, but I kept my expression carefully neutral as I approached. "Yes, Alpha?"
"Serve wine to my son." His lips curved in what might have been a smile on anyone else, but on Maurice looked predatory. "Let Austin see the quality of... service... he can expect from his future pack members."
The insult was clear—I was being displayed like livestock, my lowly status emphasized for Austin's benefit. Around us, conversations had quieted, pack members sensing the undercurrent of cruelty in their Alpha's command.
I lifted the heavy silver pitcher with steady hands and moved toward Austin. This was it—my first real opportunity to get close to him, to begin planting the seeds of my revenge. As I leaned forward to pour the dark red wine into his goblet, a strange, intoxicating scent hit me. Cedarwood and mountain storms, wild and untamed yet somehow... safe.
My hand faltered slightly, wine splashing against the rim of the goblet.
Austin's entire body went rigid. His nostrils flared as he inhaled sharply, those amber eyes snapping up to meet mine with an intensity that made my breath catch. For a moment that stretched like eternity, we stared at each other. His pupils dilated, his jaw clenched, and I saw his knuckles go white where they gripped the edge of the table.
Then his expression shuttered, becoming cold and dismissive. "Clumsy," he said quietly, his voice carrying just enough disdain to make nearby pack members chuckle. "Perhaps the omega needs more training in proper service."
Heat flooded my cheeks—not from embarrassment, but from anger. So the golden prince thought himself too good for a lowly omega's attention? Perfect. His arrogance would make this so much easier.
I lowered my eyes submissively. "Forgive me, future Alpha. I'll be more careful."
But as I stepped back, I caught the way his hands trembled slightly before he clenched them into fists. The way his breathing had become carefully controlled. Whatever had just passed between us, it had affected him far more than his dismissive words suggested.
Maurice's laughter boomed across the hall. "Don't mind her, son. Some wolves simply know their place."
As I retreated to the shadows, I couldn't shake the memory of Austin's reaction. That moment when his eyes had met mine, when something electric had sparked between us. I told myself it was simply his Alpha instincts recognizing a potential threat, but deep down, I knew it was something else entirely.
Something I could use.
---
The next morning dawned gray and cold, mountain mist clinging to the training grounds like ghostly fingers. I'd barely slept, my mind churning with plans and possibilities. The mandatory training session would give me the perfect opportunity to approach Austin under the guise of pack duty.
Pack members gathered in the wide clearing behind the main house, their breath visible in the crisp air. Warriors stretched and checked their weapons while the younger wolves shifted nervously, knowing Maurice's training sessions were notorious for their brutality.
Maurice emerged from the house with Austin at his side, both dressed in training leathers. The Alpha's voice carried easily across the grounds as he addressed the assembled pack.
"Today, Austin will oversee training for our... less experienced members." His gaze swept dismissively over the group of omegas, elderly wolves, and recent additions to the pack—including me. "Consider it practice for when he assumes leadership. Those who fail to meet his standards will face appropriate consequences."
The threat was clear. Maurice's consequences were never pleasant.
Austin stepped forward, his expression unreadable. "We'll start with basic combat forms. Partner up—experienced with inexperienced. I want to see improvement, not perfection."
As pack members began pairing off, I deliberately hung back, waiting. When most had chosen partners, I approached Austin with carefully feigned hesitation.
"Future Alpha," I said softly, keeping my voice respectful but not subservient. "I don't have a partner. Perhaps you could... guide my training personally?"
His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. Around us, I could feel the weight of watching eyes—pack members curious to see how their future Alpha would handle the omega who'd embarrassed herself at last night's feast.
"Fine," he said curtly. "But don't expect special treatment."
As he moved to demonstrate a basic defensive stance, I caught that intoxicating scent again—cedarwood and storms. This close, I could see the tension in his shoulders, the way he kept his distance even while correcting my form.
"Your stance is too wide," he said, his voice carefully professional. "You're off-balance. An opponent could easily—"
He moved to adjust my position, his hand briefly touching my shoulder. The contact sent an unexpected jolt through me, and I saw his eyes flash with something that looked almost like pain before he jerked his hand away.
"Practice that," he said roughly, stepping back. "I'll... observe from here."
But even as he watched the other training pairs, I caught him glancing in my direction. Each time our eyes met, that same electric tension crackled between us, and each time, he looked away first.
Maurice's voice suddenly cut through the morning air. "Austin! How is our little omega progressing?"
All eyes turned to us. Austin's expression became a mask of cold assessment as he looked me over. "She's... adequate. With proper discipline, she might become useful."
The dismissal stung, but I forced myself to nod gratefully. "Thank you for your patience, future Alpha."
As training continued, I began to understand the dangerous game I was playing. Whatever was happening between Austin and me, it was far more complex than simple Alpha arrogance. The way he watched me when he thought no one was looking, the careful distance he maintained, the tension that radiated from him whenever I was near—it all pointed to something he was desperately trying to hide.
Something that might be the key to everything.
By the time Maurice called an end to the session, I had my answer. Austin Harvey wasn't just the golden heir I'd planned to manipulate. He was a wolf fighting his own battle, carrying secrets that made him vulnerable.
And vulnerability was exactly what I needed to bring down the Harvey dynasty once and for all.
