After Lily left, Ethan's mood tanked. He sat on the carpet, leaning his head against the side of the cage, silent.

"What's wrong?" I asked, running my fingers through his hair. His hair was soft and comforting to touch.

"She wants to take you away from me," Ethan said quietly.

"No one's taking me anywhere."

"You'll regret this." He suddenly looked up, his eyes flashing with a kind of reckless, almost self-destructive resolve. "Sophie, you think this life is sweet because you haven't seen how crazy I can really be."
