Chapter 3
Although Macy betrayed Walter, they had once been married, after all.
Walter rushed back into the hall.
Panic erupted as guests stampeded in all directions, turning the banquet hall into complete mayhem.
In the center of the hall, two massive mastiffs flanked Lindsey and Connor, blocking their way and baring their fangs menacingly.
Lindsey turned pale with fright, yet she tightly shielded Connor behind her.
Before Walter could even process his grief, his body moved instinctively—shielding Lindsey as the two mastiffs lunged forward.
As the dog lunged, Walter grabbed the fire extinguisher by the wall and slammed it down on the animal.
But the other mastiff nimbly slipped out from under the table and sank its fangs into Walter's leg.
The mastiff's sharp fangs sank deep into Walter's thigh, nearly tearing off a chunk of flesh.
Driven wild by the scent of blood, the two mastiffs lunged at Walter in unison.
Walter instinctively threw up his arm, barely stopping those beasts from sinking their teeth into his throat.
Out of the corner of his eye, Walter saw Macy—without so much as a glance in his direction—frantically supporting Connor, who was having an attack, as they hurried out.
The bodyguards finally arrived and subdued the two mastiffs.
Walter was drenched in blood, the pain so intense he'd gone numb.
By the time Walter was escorted downstairs to wait for the ambulance, Macy had already driven off with Connor, who was suffering a heart attack.
The black Bentley sped off, leaving Walter choking on its exhaust fumes, the sting bringing tears to his eyes.

The hydrogen peroxide seared through his wound, the burning pain shooting up his nerves straight to his temples.
Separated by only a thin curtain, Macy was at Connor's side, so anxious that sweat was beading on her forehead.
It wasn't until the doctor had repeatedly confirmed that Connor' heart was out of immediate danger that Macy finally stood up—only to meet Walter's gaze from the other side of the curtain.
She froze, her gaze falling on the gruesome wound on his leg.
Macy's voice trembled. "How could you be hurt this badly?"
Walter sneered, "You ran away so quickly. Naturally, you wouldn't know how badly I was hurt."
The curtain was suddenly yanked open as a nurse strode in, medical report in hand.
"Ms. Lindsey Wilson..."
"It's me!" Macy instantly tensed up, her voice tight with worry. "What's wrong? Is my husband…?"
"Mr. Mills is fine."
The nurse glanced at Lindsey and said, "But your progesterone levels are quite high. You're likely pregnant. You should make an appointment with the OB-GYN later for confirmation."
Walter's mind went blank with a deafening roar, his vision swimming before him.
Macy was pregnant.
She was carrying another man's child...
Seeing Macy's guilty look, Walter lowered his head with a wry, self-mocking smile.
She went to great lengths to keep her true identity from Connor—even going so far as to get pregnant with his child.
She just wanted to give him the confidence to keep living.
Yet she never once considered Walter couldn't possibly survive without her.
Though Walter's wound was deep, thankfully it hadn't damaged any bones or tendons.
After just a few days in the hospital, Walter was already on crutches, hailing a cab by himself to go home.
As Walter passed by the Wilson villa, he happened to catch sight of Connor helping Macy out of the car, and a pang of bitterness welled up inside him.
The Wilson family servants were unloading a pile of maternity and baby supplies from the black Bentley's trunk.
Macy leaned contentedly against Connor' chest, her right hand gently resting on her still-flat abdomen, a radiant smile gracing her lips.
She radiated a gentle, maternal glow.
Walter tore his gaze away, a bitter ache twisting in his chest.
Guess she wasn't that opposed to having kids after all.
Back when they first got married, Macy would grimace every time Walter mentioned having kids,
She'd say she was afraid and that she wanted to focus on her career for now.
She even went behind his back and had a secret abortion.
So Walter respected her wishes and was always careful to take precautions.
At noon, Walter dug out an exquisite golden locket from his study and personally made his way to the Wilson villa.
Stepping inside, Walter was stunned to find that during his hospital stay, they had even finished decorating the nursery.
