Chapter 2
Looking at it now, if he had left, Macy would probably be happier. After all, she wouldn't have to worry about the truth being discovered constantly,
Kareem said, "Just listen to me and go. If Macy knew you were this sad, she would be sad, too."
"Alright," Walter murmured softly.
"Wh...what?" Kareem was astonished. "Are you sure about this? I'll go ahead and email them then."
"I've made up my mind," Walter said calmly. "Check with them about my start date so I can book my flight."
"Booking a flight?" A woman's voice suddenly came from the doorway.
Macy walked in, carrying a bag of health supplements and looking slightly anxious. "Is someone going away?"
"No one," Walter gave Kareem a subtle shake of his head before turning to Macy. "You must have misheard."
Walter lowered his head, gazing at the woman he was once so close to.
He didn't know how she could hurt him like this.
Back when they had just gotten married, if he so much as nicked a finger, she'd be so worried she couldn't sleep all night.
"That's good," Macy sighed in relief, stepping closer with gentle eyes. "Walter, even though Macy's gone, we're still your family. Family should stay together. Macy would be happy knowing we're here for you."
As she spoke, she placed the box on the coffee table.
She said, "Mom sent these supplements to help you recover. Connor's waiting for me at home, and don't forget about tonight's gathering."
Connor... what an intimate endearment.
Walter looked at Macy, so composed, and nearly blurted out, "After putting so much effort into this colossal lie, aren't you exhausted from all this acting?"
Walter couldn't bring himself to say it. The words died on his lips.
Forget it. They were married, after all.
Since he'd already decided to leave for good, there was no point in making a scene and humiliating her.
As dusk fell, Walter arrived punctually at the Wilson Group's gala.
As soon as Walter entered, he spotted Macy and Connor standing close together not far away.
Dressed in a fitted purple evening gown, Macy looked both elegant and alluring as she stood on tiptoe to adjust Connor's tie.
Maybe due to her ill-fitting heels, she lost her balance and tumbled right into Connor's arms.
Laughing, the two playfully tangled together until Connor leaned down and nipped at her earlobe, making her ears instantly flush crimson.
Macy's ears were always so sensitive. Back when they were together, Walter used to tease her like that in bed.
The thought made his chest tighten painfully.
Many onlookers couldn't help but whisper enviously at the scene.
Someone commented, "Connor and Lindsey are still so lovey-dovey, even after all these years of marriage."
Another added, "Love really does change a person. Back in college, Lindsey was our campus ice queen. She kept everyone at arm's length. Who would've thought she'd turn out to be so soft and clingy?"
A third chimed in, "Tell me about it. Since that car accident two years ago, they've only gotten closer..."
Walter watched the two from a distance, feeling as if an immense boulder was crushing his chest, making it almost impossible to breathe.
He set down his wine glass and stepped out onto the balcony, desperate for some fresh air.
On the balcony, the summer night breeze carried a hint of chill.
Below, a young couple nestled together, lost in their own world.
Suddenly, Walter remembered—back in their college days, he and Macy had been just like that young couple.
Walter marvelled at how fickle the human heart could be.
Just as Walter managed to compose himself, a sudden commotion broke out inside the banquet hall.
Then, someone burst out in a panic, shouting, "Help! Ross Robinson's dog has gone mad—it's biting people!"
Walter hadn't yet figured out what was going on when suddenly a voice shouted,
"Oh no! Connor and Lindsey are still inside!"
