Chapter 2
After signing the hotel acquisition contract, I walked out of the hotel with my secretary and bodyguards, all together.
We happened to bump into Jason and his family at the entrance, saying goodbye to their guests.
Jason spotted me and shot me a meaningful look, raising his eyebrows to signal me to leave.
I crossed my arms on purpose and stood my ground, not moving an inch.
Jason gritted his teeth and, taking advantage of the fact that his parents and Emily weren't paying attention, hurried over to me.
"Sarah, I told you I'd remarry you, and I will. You really didn't have to chase me all the way here."
I just stared at him, not saying a word.
Jason thought I was about to stir up trouble for Emily, so he let out a deep sigh.
"Emily grew up in a family that always put boys first. She never felt true family love at home. Now she's given me a son. I can't be so heartless as to use her and kick her away.
"Sarah, you come from a good family, with parents who love you and you're an only child. So just let her be, alright?"
I rolled my eyes at him.
How did that even make sense?
Just because I had a good family background, I was supposed to just let people treat me like crap?
Seeing that I was still quiet, Jason assumed I was on board. He looked all pleased with himself and reached out to pat my shoulder.
I pulled back, dodging his hand. "Get lost!"
He awkwardly rubbed his nose, then flashed that ridiculously confident grin.
"Oh, come on, you're jealous of Emily because you still love me..."
I interrupted him, giving him a skeptical look.
"How exactly do you figure that I still have feelings for you?"
Jason gave me that mysterious, self-assured smile, like he thought I was testing him again.
"If you didn't still love me, why are you wearing our couple bracelet?"
He did give me a bracelet once, one of those cheap online deals, barely worth 70 bucks, made from who-knows-what with some fake glass stuck on.
But I lost that thing ages ago.
The bracelet I was wearing now was custom-designed by my CEO husband, Richard Ford. It was solid gold, studded with diamonds and red and blue gemstones, worth over 300 thousand dollars.
Sure, both bracelets had stars and moons elements, but anyone with eyes could see the difference at a glance.
I raised my hand and showed off the bracelet right under his nose.
Not only did he not notice the difference, but his face was full of doting affection, with a look of he understood everything.
"Alright, I promise, I love you just as much. You're the only one in my heart, okay?
"But Emily is my son's mother, so I have to leave a place for her in my heart."
The more he talked, the more disgusted I felt.
But instead of stopping, he just gave me that creepy grin and shamelessly rambled on.
"Here's how it'll go: on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, I'll stay in Emily's room. On Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, I'll be with you. Sunday? That's my day off."
I was so speechless that I took several deep breaths to suppress my anger.
"Keep dreaming!"
Jason, worried my yelling might alert Emily, quickly cut in.
"There's seventy grand on this card, plus another thirty grand as compensation. Just be good and wait at home for tomorrow. We'll get remarried."
With that, he even blew me a kiss before walking away.
I feel so nauseous I want to throw up.
I tossed the bank card to my secretary, totally disgusted.
"Transfer all the money from this card and donate it as tuition fees for children in poor mountainous areas!"
My secretary took the card, looking a bit unsure.
"But what if he finds out..."
I just waved it off.
"Just put my name down as the donor. He can't even remember it anyway, so there's no way he'll ever trace it back to me!"
With nothing else interesting going on, I turned to leave, but Emily suddenly called out to me.
"Sareh, are you seriously coming over to my place to be my nanny and help with the baby?"
"What!"
I instinctively pointed at myself in disbelief. "Are you talking to me?"
Jason trailed behind, silently mouthing for me to play along.
"I lied to her so she'd agree to the divorce. Just pretend for now, alright? Or else I won't be able to marry you!"
I froze, totally caught off guard.
What on earth was going on?
Emily acted all aggrieved, pretending to be friendly as she took my hand with fake sweetness.
"My son is used to cloth diapers, so you'll need to wash them by hand. And his milk has to be exactly 100.4 degrees, and the bottle needs to be sterilized ninety-nine times..."
So she was just asserting her dominance, acting like the mistress playing the wife.
I pretended to clean my ear, not even bothering to listen to her nonsense.
"Sorry, you got it wrong. I'm not here to play nanny. Jason's planning to take me back as his wife."
I gave Emily a mischievous grin, just to see her reaction.
Her face filled with disbelief. She pointed at me, then turned to Jason.
"Is she telling the truth?"
Jason looked away, clearly flustered. He opened his mouth to explain, but nothing came out.
Tears rolled down Emily's cheeks.
Jason wrapped her in his arms, looking pained, and shot me a dirty look.
I just shrugged, completely unbothered, my tone breezy.
"Too bad, he's not my type. I've been remarried for a long time!"
Emily, her eyes still blurry with tears, slipped out of Jason's arms.
"Really?"
I nodded.
She immediately brightened up, a big smile spreading across her face.
Jason let out a relieved sigh and flashed me a thumbs-up.
I stared at him without blinking.
"I'm not kidding."
Jason suddenly got nervous, realizing I wasn't bluffing.
Jason's arms around Emily loosened abruptly.
"Wait, you actually got remarried?"
