Chapter 1
Married for seven years, my husband, a financial news anchor, still got my name wrong.
That day, he finally got it right once, only to beg me for a divorce for his female assistant.
"Sarah, Emily's pregnant, and it's mine.
"Let's get divorced now. In a couple of years, we can get back together..."
I gave a calm smile and agreed without hesitation.
At the child's first birthday party, he came to me with the baby in his arms, looking serious and earnest.
"Sarah, we can get back together, but Emily can't stand being away from the baby. She needs to stay and look after the child."
"What?" I was stunned for a moment.
His face darkened instantly. "You've never had a child, so you can't understand how painful it is for a mother to be apart from her child.
"I know you've been wronged, so I'll give you 30 thousand dollars as compensation. Also, I've already booked us for a remarriage at the city hall tomorrow morning at 8."
But my name is Sareh Nolan, not Sarah.
Seeing him about to lose it, I quickly called over bodyguards.
"This guy's nuts. Get him out of here!"
What a complete mess.
I'd just given birth to triplets, and my CEO husband went out of his way to buy this hotel as a gift for me. Who would've thought I'd run into this idiot here?
*****
"Who dares lay a hand on me?"
Jason West looked stern and cold in his pure black suit. His presence was so intimidating, it sent chills down everyone's spine.
I gestured for the bodyguards to back off.
He immediately raised his chin, looking down at me with blatant contempt.
"Sarah, I told you before. After Emily has the baby, we'll remarry!"
"What kind of drama is this now?" I laughed and shot back.
"What makes you so sure I'd just wait around for you instead of marrying some rich guy?"
Jason's face instantly darkened, his voice turning icy and sharp.
"Alright, Sarah, cut it out. Who would ever want you except me?
"You were the one chasing after me back then! And seriously, what rich guy would go for secondhand goods?
"If you keep making a fuss, that 30 thousand dollars for getting back together? Forget it!"
Just as he finished speaking, my phone buzzed with a notification.
[Bank account: 300 thousand dollars received.]
It was from my darling husband, with a message: [My client treated me to coffee, so I'm treating my wife to coffee too.]
I couldn't help but smile.
Maybe rich guys really didn't want "secondhand goods."
But I was a modern woman who didn't see herself as "goods"!
Seeing me stay silent, Jason cleared his throat and tried to steer the conversation away.
"I know you're still mad about what happened before.
"But back then, if you hadn't messed up the script and made Emily take the fall, she wouldn't have gotten drunk from heartbreak, and we... we wouldn't have..."
"So now you're saying I messed up the script and pinned it on Emily?"
I gave him a deadpan stare, feeling like this whole situation was just ridiculous.
At that time, it was Emily, an intern editor, who didn't proofread carefully. She filled in the wrong financial data for a company about to go public, even marked it in red, making it look like they were losing money.
As the chief producer, I was just doing my job by catching the mistake in time and pointing it out, honestly just trying to help her.
But Emily covered her face and cried pitifully, as if I had bullied her.
Jason was a financial news anchor. How could he not know the risks and consequences of broadcasting wrong numbers? It could ruin his career and mess up the lives of everyone involved with those companies.
He knew all that, but he just chose to turn a blind eye.
And he used it as an excuse to take Emily out drinking, partying all night at the bar.
That was the first time in three years of marriage he didn't come home overnight.
I stayed up all night, watching my phone, hoping he'd call and explain himself.
But what I got the next day was him applying to the station's leadership to have Emily transferred across departments to be his assistant.
Later, when Emily got pregnant. His parents forced him to divorce me for the sake of the baby.
He said, "Sarah, you want to focus on your career and don't want kids right now, but my parents are dying for a grandchild. You get it, right?
"And you like kids too, don't you? Once the baby's a year old and doesn't need breastfeeding anymore, I'll dump her and remarry you right away!"
When he said that, I was so mad I had to laugh. I finally got what it means to be angry to the point of laughing.
Back in school, he was the campus heartthrob, so gentle I fell for him at first sight, whom I chased so hard. But now? He was just a has-been.
After the divorce, I went on a blind date and married a CEO, and to my surprise, I actually found a guy who's not only handsome and gentle, but treated me like royalty.
And now, he was still busy coming up with righteous excuses for their sleazy behavior, pretending it was all justified.
How ridiculous!
In the distance, a wide-eyed beauty in a strapless mermaid-style wedding gown rushed over, looking anxious.
"Jason, who are you talking to... Sa-Sareh?"
"You and my husband... you... you two..."
Emily looked like she'd just caught her husband cheating. Her eyes instantly filled with tears as she grabbed the baby and hurried away.
"Emily!"
As he passed by me, Jason stopped for a second, then looked back at me with obvious reluctance in his eyes.
"Sarah, I'll be waiting for you outside the city hall at 8 tomorrow morning."
I let out a cold, mocking laugh.
He couldn't even get my name right five times in this short conversation, and he seriously expected me to remarry him?
He must be dreaming.
