Chapter 4

The fetal monitor continued to scream as the ambulance pulled away.

At the hospital, nurses rushed me into a delivery room.

My baby’s heart rate kept falling.

There was no time to wait for Alexander.

A nurse held out a consent form.

“We may need to assist the delivery. Is there anyone you want us to call?”

“My husband.”

She called the number on my chart.

No answer.

She tried again.

Straight to voicemail.

I closed my eyes.

“Call my friend Claire.”

By the time Claire arrived, I was already pushing.

The doctor used vacuum assistance to guide my baby…
