When Charles showed up tonight, he brought home a box from my favorite dessert place.

"Honey, how are you feeling today? Still throwing up? Sorry, something came up at work and I had to stay late." He walked over, reaching out to hug me, his voice as gentle as always.

Back then, I would've helped him take off his coat and asked if he was tired.
