Chapter 3
The day the test results came out, the sunshine was almost blinding.
I drove to the hospital alone and picked up that thin envelope.
Sitting in my car, I stared at the envelope for an eternity before finally tearing it open.
I skipped right to the last line. [DNA analysis confirms Faye Taylor is not the biological mother of the fetus.]
Every word on that page burned into my mind, tearing apart everything I believed in.
The baby inside me had no connection to me at all.
The world went silent, and then, in the next second, everything collapsed.
All those warm memories, all that supposed love, shattered into dust, exposing the ugly reality lurking beneath it all.
It was all fake. Every bit of it was fake. Two years of love. The grand proposal.
All those painful rounds of IVF. All those days when I curled up in bed after taking fertility shots.
All those nights when my hormones were so out of whack that I broke down in tears.
He would hold me in his arms and comfort me. He would tell me, "You've worked so hard, honey. From now on, the three of us will live a happy life together."
It was all an act. He had put on that entire show for me.
I placed my hand on the thing growing inside me, and for the first time, I didn't feel any excitement, just overwhelming nausea and fear.
This wasn't my baby. This was Charles and another woman's love child, using my body as an incubator for their twisted romance.
And I was just the perfect, clueless incubator they'd handpicked for their scheme.
Why would they do something like this?
Charles was an only child, and his parents were old-fashioned and set in their ways, always nagging about wanting a grandchild.
Maybe Sophie couldn't have kids, so they went to all this trouble? I wasn't sure.
A wave of absurdity and disgust crashed over me.
I leaned over the steering wheel, retching violently, but nothing came out, only tears, burning hot as they streamed down my face.
I lost track of how long I cried until my tears finally ran dry.
Something cold and hard started to settle in my veins, slowly replacing the initial collapse and despair.
I placed my hand on my belly again, and after a long moment, a slow, bitter smile crept onto my face.
Charles, Sophie, you want this baby, didn't you?
Fine. Then go to hell together.
