Chapter 3
Series 1 Chapter 3
At 2:13 a.m., I woke up to a sharp, twisting cramp in my abdomen. It stole the breath right out of my lungs.
I pulled back the blanket. My heart stopped.
There was blood. A dark, terrifying patch of red stained the white sheets.
My hands shook violently. I grabbed my phone from the nightstand. I dialed Ethan's number.
He answered on the fourth ring.
Behind Ethan’s voice, I heard music and laughter.
His company was holding a financing dinner at the Grand Aurelia Hotel. He had promised to come home before midnight.
On the marble counter, his text from three hours earlier still glowed on my phone.
Important investors arrived. Don’t wait up.
I had not planned to wait.
Then the pain began.
At first, it felt like pressure beneath my ribs. I drank water and lay on my left side, just as Dr. Patel had taught me.
The pain did not stop.
It moved lower.
By two o’clock, I could no longer stand straight.
"Ethan," I gasped. I curled into a ball. "I am bleeding. The pain is terrible. I need to go to the hospital right now."
A short silence followed.
Then, I heard Vivian’s soft, elegant laughter in the background. She was right next to him.
Ethan let out a heavy sigh. He sounded like he was dealing with a troublesome child.
"Clara, really?" Ethan said. "Are you exaggerating again?"
I gripped the bedsheets. "Our baby is in danger! Please come home."
Ethan went quiet.
For one foolish second, I thought he had finally heard the fear in my voice.
Then a woman spoke near him.
I knew Vivian’s voice at once.
"Stay calm. She knows tonight is important."
Her words were muffled, but Ethan did not move away from her.
A few seconds later, my phone vibrated.
Vivian had sent a message to our shared finance group.
Clara may be reacting to the new account limits. Do not make changes under pressure.
She had turned my blood into a negotiation tactic.
Ethan believed her before he even looked at me.
"This is about the accounts, isn’t it?" he asked."You started calling as soon as you realized I wouldn’t remove the restrictions. You know exactly what those words do to me."
"I spent a month creating those limits because you cannot control your emotions. I will not undo them every time you create another emergency."
I closed my eyes. He trusted Vivian's financial theories over his bleeding wife.
I stopped asking him to understand.
Ethan was still talking. He said something about the investors. He said Vivian had warned him that I might do this.
I pressed the red button.
The bedroom became silent.
I ended the call, wiped my thumb across the screen, and dialed 911 before he could call again.
The dispatcher answered on the first ring.
"I am pregnant," I told the dispatcher quietly."I am bleeding. Please send an ambulance."
Ten minutes later, paramedics rushed into the bedroom.
"Blood pressure is dropping fast!"a paramedic shouted.
They lifted me onto a stretcher. They strapped an oxygen mask over my face.
They pushed me into the ambulance. The bright lights blinded me. The siren screamed wildly into the dark night.
"Fetal distress!" the paramedic yelled to the driver. "Drive faster! We are losing them!"
I lay on the narrow bed. I felt so weak. But my mind was terribly clear.
I was completely alone. My husband was drinking champagne with another woman. He thought I was playing a game.
My phone vibrated on my chest.
It was a new email from my lawyer.
Subject: Divorce Agreement Draft.
I opened the document. Another painful cramp hit me, but I did not close my eyes.
On the screen, Ethan’s name sat beside mine.
I remembered his voice at the clinic.
Then you wait.
I stopped waiting.
I signed the final page.
Then I opened my lawyer’s last message.
[Once you authorize me, I can file first thing in the morning.]
My fingers shook as I typed two words.
File it.
The message showed Delivered.
I locked my phone and closed my eyes as the ambulance pulled into the emergency entrance.
Ethan was still at the hotel with Vivian.
He had no idea that by the time he came home, I would be gone.
And this time, I didn’t need my husband’s approval.
