Chapter 6
Damon arrived at the hospital late at night, smelling faintly of alcohol. He went into the bathroom, leaving his wallet on the ground. I picked it up and waited for him.
When he emerged, I was holding a small photograph. "Who's this?" I asked.
Damon hesitated for a moment. "Do you really want to know?" His straightforwardness caught me off guard, and my hand froze in mid-air. He casually took back the photo and slipped it into his wallet without a second thought.
I sat on the bed in shock for a while. He tossed his towel aside and climbed into the bed. I got up and walked to the window, pushing it open to let the crisp night air wash over my face.
He slammed the window shut. "That's not how you get wild and reckless!"
I turned back and sat on the sofa. "Why aren't you sleeping?" He clenched his fists, visibly annoyed.
"You go ahead and sleep. I'm hungry; I'm going to order some takeout."
He paused for a moment. Soon enough, the takeout arrived, and I got a big serving of pasta. I hunched over, eating it eagerly.
"Is it really that good? Your stomach won’t like that rich food."
"But it tastes amazing. I’ve been stuck eating plain toast for days."
His movement towards me stopped. I shoveled another spoonful into my mouth, probably looking ridiculous with bits of pasta sauce on my lips.
"Damon, let me ask you: if that girl and I were both in danger, who would you save?"
He stopped, his expression turning serious, followed by a long silence. "Can't you just answer me?"
"Does that mean you'd save her?"
He just reached for a lighter, ready to light a cigarette. I leaned back. "I already have my answer. Why not just admit it?"
With that, I stood up and went to the bathroom. Before leaving, I removed the bracelet I was wearing and gently placed it on the counter.
