Chapter 1
After the accident, my head was injured, and I told everyone I had lost my memory, acting as though I couldn't remember anyone.
In truth, I simply didn't want to remember them anymore.
As expected, my once-proud husband, Damon, presented me with divorce papers.
"Maya," he said, "before your accident, we were discussing divorce. Just sign it, and I'll give you a generous settlement..."
I caught sight of the figure on the check beside me and grabbed it without hesitation.
"Alright, that works for me. I'll sign."
I could clearly sense the wave of relief washing over Damon as I put pen to paper.
He'd wanted to be rid of me for a long time.
After he left, I gently massaged the tenderness at the back of my head.
The doctor had mentioned there was an inoperable tumor pressing on my cerebellum.
Tears silently streamed down my cheeks.
That night, I packed up my things and left Chicago.
As I sat on the bus, the Damon Enterprises building was lit up with a grand display of fireworks.
I wasn't sure if they were celebrating the end of our marriage or Hayden Jenkins' return to the city.
I drew a breath, fogging up the bus window.
With a few strokes, I wrote, "So long, Damon."

When the car lost control and crashed into the stone embankment, it happened too fast for me to react.
Then came the violent crash.
My seat crumpled, and blood began to stream down from my head, soaking the car seat.
When I woke again, everything around me was glaringly white.
I realized I was in a hospital.
Several familiar faces stood around the bed.
"You're awake? Thank goodness."
"Maya, tell me what you'd like to eat, and I'll have Emory make it for you."
My gaze drifted blankly over the faces encircling my bed.
