Chapter 5
The next twenty-four hours were a blur of cold, calculated preparation. I didn't sleep. I spent the night in the shadows of my home, copying raw, unedited logs onto a secure drive. I drafted a public blast to every major news outlet. If Ethan wanted a stage, I would give him one. It would be my stage, not his.
When the morning of the Tech Showcase arrived, I was shaking, but my resolve was absolute. I walked into the school auditorium with the weight of the administrator key card in my pocket. It felt like a burning coal.
The hall was a hive of anticipation. Investors, media, and board members filled every seat. They were hungry for the next big disruption in "family tech". Ethan stood under the spotlight. His posture radiated a calm, practiced authority that made my skin crawl. Mia sat in the front row, clutching her tablet like a lifeline. It had become the only security she trusted in a world Ethan had systematically dismantled.
"Mommy 2.0 is the ultimate safety net," Ethan told the crowd. His voice was smooth and hypnotic. "It protects children from the volatility of human failure".
I walked down the center aisle. My heart hammered a war rhythm against my ribs. Ethan saw me. His smirk sharpened into predatory satisfaction. He tapped his tablet. The auditorium speakers filled with the sound of my own voice: "I don't want to be a mother anymore".
The room fell deathly quiet. The silence was heavy with judgment. The audience turned toward me. Their faces were a cocktail of shock, pity, and growing disgust.
"This is why I filed for emergency custody," Ethan announced. His mask of heartbreak was perfectly calibrated. "My wife is a danger to our child. Security, remove her".
Two guards surged forward. They grabbed my arms. I didn't fight back. I went still. My breathing was steady despite the frantic thumping of my heart. I tapped the override command on my phone.
The giant screen on stage glitched violently. The pristine UI of Mommy 2.0 warped into jagged, red static. I hovered my finger over the 'EXECUTE' button. It would dump every hidden file: the wiretaps, the fatigue logs, and the cold-blooded proof of his manipulation.
Then, a warning flared across the screen in brutal white text: "ACCESSING SYSTEM WILL PERMANENTLY EXPOSE ALL PRIVATE DATA IN STORAGE BLOCK C, INCLUDING CHILD'S PSYCHOLOGICAL FILES."
My heart plummeted. Storage Block C. Ethan had buried his crimes within Mia’s private therapy recordings. Those were the very sessions where she tearfully confessed to her therapist that she was terrified I would leave her because I was "too tired".
Ethan leaned into his microphone. His voice was a low, taunting vibration that only I could feel. "Do it, Nora. The world wants to see exactly how 'stable' your daughter is. Prove to them that you care more about your reputation than protecting her secret heart".
The countdown timer began to tick. 10… 9… 8…
My finger shook. Ethan’s eyes were filled with the smug certainty of a man who thought he had cornered me. He didn't know I hadn't come here to win the argument. I had come here to trigger the audit.
He thought I was choosing between the evidence and my daughter. He was wrong. I was choosing the moment he lost everything.
3… 2… 1…
I didn't press 'Execute.'
I pressed 'Upload.'
