Chapter 4
The car ride home was a suffocating tomb. Ethan drove with a serene, terrifying confidence. He acted as if he hadn't just watched his own daughter break down in public. Once home, he locked himself in the bathroom. He left the door to his study slightly ajar.
I didn't want to go in. But then I heard it. A faint, synthesized lullaby echoed from his computer. It was the same tune the AI had used to manipulate Mia. My mother’s instinct pulled me toward the study like a magnet. I had to know. Was he still recording her?
I pushed the door open. His laptop was wide open on the desk. The screen glowed with a folder directory. It looked like a digital graveyard of my own life. I stepped inside. My pulse hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.
I clicked on the master folder. It was labeled "Mommy 2.0." I opened the sub-directory: "Maternal Fatigue."
My breath hitched. The speakers filled with the sound of my own raw, jagged sobbing from my worst postpartum days. I clicked another file: "Emotional Instability." It was audio of me apologizing to Mia after I had shattered that blue mug. My voice was thick with self-loathing.
Ethan hadn't just recorded me. He had surgically edited these moments. He cropped out the apologies. He cut out the growth and the repair. He left only the sound of my rage and Mia’s terrified whimpers. He created a digital profile of a "broken" mother.
My heart hammered. Bile rose in my throat. He wasn't just replacing me. He was engineering my demise. He used my lowest points to train a machine to be "better" than a human.
I scrolled further. I found a draft email to his lead attorney. He was attaching these files as "Expert Evidence" for an emergency custody battle. He had been planning to strip me of my rights for months. He weaponized my grief to calibrate the tool that would take my daughter from me.
Suddenly, my phone buzzed. It was an encrypted message from Celeste Ward, the company’s CFO.
“Meet me at the office hub. I have the master bypass key for his system. If you want to stop him, come now.”
I found Celeste in the lobby. Her face was illuminated by the cold, blue light of the server screens. "You used my pain to train it," I whispered. My rage finally eclipsed my fear.
"We used your suffering to set the baseline," Celeste replied. Her eyes were devoid of empathy. They were purely transactional. She slid an administrator key card across the glass desk. "Ethan is losing control. He doesn't care if he bankrupts the company to win his personal vendetta. Use this key to expose his illegal recording logs at the launch tomorrow. Destroy him, and the board will back you."
I clutched the key card. The plastic bit into my palm. But as I looked at Celeste, I realized the truth. I was just another pawn in her corporate power grab. Ethan’s launch was rigged. The trap was designed to turn my own daughter into a witness against me.
If I didn't play this perfectly, I wouldn't just lose the company. I would lose Mia to a man who saw my life as nothing more than raw data.
