It was from my mom. My stomach sank as I answered.

My mom's anxious face filled the screen. Standing beside her was an elegantly dressed woman. It was Helen Carter, Adam's mom. The woman who was supposed to become my mother-in-law. Not anymore.

Helen shoved my mom aside, her face nearly pressed against the screen. Her expression was caught somewhere between ingratiating and commanding, which made it look almost unnatural.

"Emmy, you finally answered," Helen said sharply. "How could you leave without saying a word? Whatever happened, couldn't we have talked it through?"
