Chapter 4
Margaret looked panicked for a second, but then snapped right back to her usual smug self.
"Vivian was right, you really are just on your period. You got blood all over the road. So hurry up and apologize already. Once you're done, I'll get someone to clean up your mess and you can go rest, alright?"
I could barely get a word out.
Mrs. Lawson stepped out of the car and tried to help me up, but I was so weak I couldn't even lift myself. She tried several times, but I just kept sinking back to the ground, completely drained.
Margaret, convinced I was just putting on an act, waved Mrs. Lawson off. "Don't bother with her.
"Mrs. Lawson, it's boiling out here. You should get back in the car and just wait for Vivian to come and apologize. Don't risk getting heatstroke."
Mrs. Lawson was in utter disbelief at what she was seeing and hearing.
She was so furious she couldn't hold it in anymore. Glaring at Margaret and Edward, she exploded, "Are you even human?
"Look at all that blood, anyone can see it's not just a period, it's a miscarriage! She could die from this! And you're still forcing Vera to take the fall for Vivian? What kind of parents are you? You're absolute monsters!"
Mr. Lawson got out and helped his wife get me into the car.
He spun the car around and sped back to the villa. The hospital was way too far, but they had a private doctor and some basic medical gear at home, enough to handle an emergency if it came to that.
Mr. Lawson floored it, pushing the car as fast as it would go.
Mrs. Lawson kept soothing me. "It's alright, we're almost home. Once we're there, everything will be okay."
I was in so much pain I was about to black out.
I clutched my stomach, struggling just to breathe.
Mrs. Lawson called Jason, since they were business partners, it was easy to get in touch.
As soon as Jason answered, Vivian's excited voice came through the phone.
"Wow, it's the aurora! It's gorgeous! Jason, hurry up and take a picture with me! I want to ride on your shoulders so everyone knows I'm the most important one here!"
Jason was always super disciplined, the kind of guy who followed every rule to the letter.
He never broke the rules, not even once.
I was sure he'd say no, but then, out of nowhere, he agreed.
Mrs. Lawson took my hand, her grip gentle and full of concern.
Then, her voice turned icy with anger. "Jason, your wife just lost the baby. Get back here right now."
There was a brief silence on the other end of the line.
Jason chuckled and shot back, "My wife wasn't even pregnant, so how could she have a miscarriage? Mrs. Lawson, you must be joking. Are you trying to trick me into bringing Vivian back to apologize?
"That's just ridiculous. Vivian isn't going to apologize. If you think Vera's apology isn't enough, then when I get back, I'll come over myself and take full responsibility."
It felt like my stomach stopped hurting.
My heart hurt so much, it went numb, and I couldn't feel anything anymore.
Mrs. Lawson was at a loss for words.
She snapped a photo of me, covered in blood, my face contorted in agony.
She sent it to Jason.
"See for yourself," she said.
The moment Jason opened the photo, his heart stopped.
